As a long-time gamer and fan of action movies, I must admit that I was thrilled to see Dave Bautista stepping out of his comfort zone and taking on a leading role in a romantic comedy. His transformation from a hard-hitting action star to a tender romantic lead is nothing short of inspiring.
Last year when Dave Bautista voiced his curiosity about not receiving a romantic comedy role, it felt like change might never come. But now, it appears that fortune is finally on our side!
In January 2023, Bautista expressed to Page Six his desire to star in a romantic comedy, but shared that he hadn’t had the chance yet, and pondered, “Could it be that I’m not appealing enough? Is there something about me that makes me undesirable for these roles?
During the Los Angeles debut of his latest film, “The Killer’s Game,” on Monday, Bautista shared with The Hollywood Reporter that the viral remarks initiated quite a discussion, leading to an influx of phone calls.
As soon as I made the statement, I began receiving calls right away. We’re currently working on a couple of ideas that are quite humorous,” he explained, adding that things were progressing in such a way that they resembled a romantic comedy movie. Unlike an action-romantic comedy, this was more of a traditional romantic comedy.
In a new venture, Bautista debuts in that domain through “The Killer’s Game“, where he portrays an assassin suffering from a critical illness and arranges his own death, unaware that the diagnosis was incorrect. As fate would have it, he must now battle a horde of hitmen. The movie also features Bautista’s character in a romantic relationship with Sofia Boutella’s character, signifying his first role as a leading man alongside a love interest.
Bautista found it nerve-wracking, but he’s optimistic about the response. Despite feeling somewhat self-conscious, he embraced the challenge of playing the lead role. He decided that he needed to move away from taking numerous supporting roles and instead seek out leading roles, even if he had to create them himself. He was inspired by Mahershala Ali who said something similar: to become a leading actor, one must start rejecting supporting roles. Bautista aims to be a leading actor, as this is key to progress in the industry and growing as an artist. His ultimate goal is to become a bigger star.
He went on to say, “It’s amusing because my ambition is to become a more prominent figure so I can create lesser-known movies, which is what truly excites me. However, the quickest way to achieve this is by becoming a commodity; once you’re a well-known star, you’re a commodity. So, here’s the catch — people are more inclined to listen to you and consider your ideas if you can offer something valuable, and that’s what you do when you’re a big star. Therefore, I’m hoping to expand my fame to the point where I can produce smaller independent films.
Previously collaborating with Bautista on “Hotel Artemis,” Boutella expressed her thoughts about witnessing her friend’s transition into a romantic lead, stating, “I believe it’s relatable, and indeed, why not? He excels at it, I found him extremely moving in the film.” Similarly, Klementieff, who has worked with Bautista on the “Guardians of the Galaxy” series, added that this new movie offers viewers a chance to “observe various shades of his acting abilities… It’s captivating to see a softer side of him, something endearing and emotional.
The Killer’s Game hits theaters on Friday.
