As a long-time fan of Yellowstone, I must admit that the departure of Kevin Costner as John Dutton has left a noticeable void, but at the same time, it seems to have eased the filming process for the cast and crew. Luke Grimes’ recent comments about the fifth season being the easiest to shoot without Costner present suggest that perhaps the drama off-screen was more detrimental than beneficial to the show.
It’s no secret that Kevin Costner’s departure from Yellowstone followed a prolonged period of reported tension between him and Taylor Sheridan. In the end, the show went ahead in his absence. Now, Luke Grimes, who plays Costner’s on-screen son, has shared his thoughts about filming the fifth season without Costner, stating that it was less complicated to work on the show without him.
In the lead-up to the final episodes of Yellowstone’s fifth season gracing our screens in 2024, Luke Grimes, the man behind the character Kayce Dutton, shared some insights with Esquire about this concluding chapter. While fans were disheartened by Kevin Costner’s decision to retire John Dutton’s cowboy hat, for me as his on-screen son, his departure made the filming process less complicated since Grimes explained:
It’s likely that everyone can recognize that the time had come. In all sincerity, Kevin’s absence brought a certain peace that also lessened some of the disputes. Admittedly, it didn’t exactly make the experience more enjoyable. However, I must say, it turned out to be one of our most straightforward seasons to shoot. (I’m not trying to blame anyone.)
In case some may have forgotten, the gossip surrounding Kevin Costner’s disagreements about the show “Yellowstone” was quite intense. Although unverified, conflicts over scheduling and the development of his character, along with other matters, created a rather chaotic scenario.
As a passionate gamer diving into the world of virtual storytelling, I can’t help but draw parallels to a real-life event that unfolded in the gaming of cinematic universes. Once upon a time, word leaked out from Puck News (via Esquire) about an intense conversation between Costner and Taylor Sheridan. The tale goes that Costner presented a list of demands, including more cash, a shorter work schedule, and here’s the twist – the power to scrutinize, endorse, and potentially veto every script penned by the creative genius behind Yellowstone. Now, this demand didn’t sit well with Taylor, as he’s known for writing his own scripts.

If the rumors about their disagreements are valid, it wouldn’t be surprising if the friction between the lead actor and the show’s creator led to disputes on the filming location.
Indeed, we can’t fully understand the details of what transpired. But, due to Luke Grimes’ revelation, filming for Season 5B turned out to be less complicated. It’s possible this ease came from the tension he spoke about being absent, considering Costner was no longer present as well.
At this point, we’re well into a series of episodes that were produced without Yellowstone’s long-term main actor. Remarkably, they chose not to delay the explanation of his departure and instead, unveiled John’s demise swiftly in the mid-season return episode.
The reaction to that decision has been substantial, with some people feeling that John’s final outcome blemished the character’s standing. Yet, it also adds an intriguing twist to the narrative as the Dutton children grapple with strategies to preserve the ranch their father dedicated his entire life to maintaining.
We’re fortunate that this coming Sunday (December 15), we’ll discover exactly how they handle things on Yellowstone, as its final episode airs. It seems that the focus will be on Kayce, played by Grimes, potentially giving up the ranch and perhaps the climax of Jamie and Beth’s conflict. All in all, it looks set to be an exciting episode as the youngsters decide the fate of the ranch following John Dutton’s demise, and I for one can hardly wait to find out how it concludes.
To watch the last episode of Yellowstone without Kevin Costner, tune in live on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on the Paramount Network. If you’d like to revisit the collaboration between Costner, Grimes, and the rest of the cast, you can stream the first four and a half seasons of this contemporary Western series with a Peacock subscription.
