On last Sunday, the winners of the 2025 Golden Globes were announced within the context of the 2025 TV lineup. Comedian Nikki Glaser was in charge of hosting the event, and she did a commendable job, eliciting laughter with her monologue and maintaining a humorous tone throughout the show. However, there were moments where Glaser seemed to hold back on certain jokes, as revealed later when she shared some material that she had initially planned but didn’t include in her opening address. Among the topics she mentioned were Nicole Kidman and the Holocaust.
The audience, for the most part, appeared satisfied by the jokes the comedian shared during her performance. Her ability to gauge an audience, as demonstrated in her act, is evident. This is why, when discussing her routine on The Howard Stern Show, she mentioned that she purposefully left out certain jokes while fine-tuning her material. During her conversation with the experienced shock jock, she shared insights about their collaboration process.
In some instances, I found myself expressing thoughts that weren’t suitable for CBS. On those occasions, I’d reply, ‘Let’s put this in the Stern folder instead.’ That way, we could discuss it more freely on a platform like The Howard Stern Show.
Continuing the topic, Nikki Glaser disclosed some additional humor pieces that didn’t make it into her opening act. As she explained in the YouTube video, she playfully criticized Nicole Kidman and touched on the subject of the Holocaust during the performance; however, the original jokes were a tad more straightforward. Here are some of them for your viewing pleasure:
[Provide the jokes below]
- “You know, if Adrian Brody could go back in time, he would thank baby Hitler for his career.”
- “The Wild Robot is nominated tonight, and by that I mean Nicole Kidman after two white wines.”
- “Think of it, this is the last time all of you will be in the same room together before the Diddy trial.”
- The Golden Globes is the biggest show where you can see the biggest stars in movies and television joined together with the same goal: getting out of here tonight before Dax Shepard asks them to do his podcast.”
- “Nicolas Cage is here tonight, looking well-rested after a night of sleeping in Elvis’ coffin”/”Nicolas Cage is here, and so is the band of skeletons that follows him playing ragtime jazz.”
I can’t help but wonder how those jokes would have been received if they were delivered live at the Beverly Hilton. However, an essential aspect of comedy is adapting to the audience, and it seems that the performer of Someday You’ll Die was spot on. This could be reassuring for some Golden Globe viewers, given the backlash faced by last year’s host, Jo Koy, during his monologue around this same time.
From her earlier remarks, it’s clear that Nikki Glaser dedicated considerable time and energy to her preparation for the show. In seeking guidance, she consulted with experienced hosts such as Ricky Gervais, who famously has a provocative style. Gervais advised his successor to stay authentic and avoid feeling intimidated by the high-profile attendees. While there were several jokes that didn’t make the cut, Glaser chose not to address certain topics entirely. For example, she avoided commenting on the legal situation involving Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni.
It seems hosting a show isn’t an easy task, especially for comedians who might not feel at home in the traditional Hollywood celebrity setting. However, Nikki Glaser proved to be quite impressive during her performance, except for a minor wardrobe issue backstage. Overall, her show ran smoothly. Comedians following in her footsteps should pay close attention to stage presence and humor selection.
Those with a Paramount+ subscription can watch the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, while for those without a membership, the event can be viewed on CBS’s official website.
