Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor: Fun, Smart, and a Little Terrifying

In James Gunn’s forthcoming Superman movie, fans eagerly await fresh interpretations of well-known DC characters, both heroes and villains. Notably, there is a great deal of excitement surrounding Nicholas Hoult’s portrayal of Lex Luthor, a deeply intricate antagonist whose connection with the Man of Steel has been developed and refined over multiple comic books, movies, and TV shows. During Nicolas Hoult’s panel at MegaCon in Orlando, Florida, Collider had the opportunity to discuss some insights into Luther’s motivations while commending Gunn for his ability to add an engaging new perspective to the character.

Suppose a person possessed unlimited authority and could perform any action. What transpires when their actions contradict society’s notion of what is right? I find James Gunn’s portrayal of this character captivating, both entertaining and intellectually stimulating. I’d rather not divulge too many details.

The team responsible for Superman has been secretive about the plot details, considering the numerous components involved. From characters such as those from The Authority or heroes like Metamorpho, Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, and Green Lantern, each contributing to the movie, there are plenty of intriguing aspects in this initial film for the new DCU. The dynamic between Houlth’s Luthor and the other heroes, as well as his impact within the broader DCU, remains to be discovered. Regardless, it will be thrilling to witness the character’s tale unfold, especially when compared to other live-action adaptations in cinema.

Nicolas Hoult is the Latest in a Long Line of Memorable Lex Luthor Actors

Over the various comic book and media adaptations, Lex Luthor has transformed from a mad scientist to a calculating, ruthless business tycoon. Yet, his intelligence and complex feelings towards Superman have consistently been central themes, fueling some of the most captivating stories about this character. Gene Hackman’s portrayal of Luthor in the Richard Donner Superman movies remains iconic, as he shared a compelling chemistry with Christopher Reeves that significantly impacted the way Superman tales were told for years.

In the Smallville TV series, Michael Rosenbaum delivered an unforgettable portrayal of his character. This Superman prequel delved into Clark Kent’s adolescent years before he donned the red cape. Over the course of several television seasons, the show allowed for a more complex depiction of Rosenbaum’s Luthor. Initially, he was a friend of Clark’s, but when Clark’s Kryptonian heritage was revealed, it caused a split in their friendship that eventually transformed into a fierce rivalry.

Jesse Eisenberg portrayed Lex Luthor in Zack Snyder’s “Batman vs. Superman” and “Justice League” films, delivering an offbeat portrayal of the character who, unfortunately, didn’t get much attention as the DCEU concluded. Now, it’s Nicholas Hoult’s turn to step into the role, and given his skills and the fact that Luthor is being written by James Gunn – a writer known for creating complex villains with a hint of empathy – we can expect Hoult to put his own stamp on the character.
