Ke Huy Quan, the Academy Award-winning actor who made a triumphant comeback in the A24 film “Everything Everywhere All at Once”, is set to don the Data suit once more. During interviews for his new movie, “Love Hurts”, Quan hinted at the possibility of a sequel to The Goonies and stated that all parties are on board with the idea.
In 1985, Quan starred as Data in a teen adventure comedy film titled “The Goonies,” directed by Richard Donner. This movie is part of Amblin Entertainment’s collection and is heavily influenced by Steven Spielberg’s ’80s cinematic style. The film was successful at the box office and continues to have a dedicated fanbase even today, serving as an iconic symbol of ’80s cinema. Surprisingly, despite its popularity, a sequel never materialized. In a conversation with Collider, Quan discussed “Love Hurts,” but couldn’t help but field questions about the elusive “Goonies 2.” When asked, Quan said:
Everyone is thinking about it, and I’ve consulted everyone, including our lead Goonie, Steven Spielberg, who shares this enthusiasm. We’re all on the same page. Given the movie’s popularity, we aim to create an exceptional script that matches the original’s charm. It seems like every couple of years, there’s a buzz about a potential Goonies project.
I’m absolutely in favor of making it happen. It sounds fantastic if we can bring it into reality. I can’t wait to be the first one there, and I’d surely enjoy revisiting Data and embarking on another exciting journey with my fellow Goonies.
Recently, we shared news about a potential reboot of the classic film “The Goonies” being developed by Warner Bros. However, since then, no fresh information regarding this project has been disclosed. It’s said that Chris Columbus, who penned the original screenplay for “The Goonies,” is currently working on the script for the upcoming adaptation and also a new live-action sequel of the popular creature comedy “Gremlins.
Why ‘The Goonies’ Never Had a Sequel
In the film, a gang of teenagers embarks on an adventure to locate a pirate’s hidden fortune close to their hometown. Known as the Goonies, which consist of Mikey, Chunk, Mouth, and Data, they aim to discover the riches of the notorious one-eyed pirate Captain Willy One-Eyed. Their objective is to protect their neighborhood from being seized by ruthless business tycoons. Yet, they’re not alone in this quest; the Fratellis, a group of nefarious crooks, also become aware of the treasure and join the chase for the loot as well.
Of course, a film like “The Goonies” seemed destined to have a follow-up, much like other blockbusters from the ’80s. Unfortunately, Warner Bros. didn’t seem keen on the idea. Years went by, and the original gang was no longer teenagers, leading one to wonder: “Could there be a sequel for The Goonies? Could it still star the original cast?” This is what Corey Feldman (Mouth) recently mentioned at the premiere of “Love Hurts” after the Goonies had a mini-reunion: “Everyone looks great. Sean [Astin] is looking good. Josh [Brolin] is looking good. We all look good, and we’re still alive. The Goonies never say die… There’s always hope.
