The Anaconda series has long been a cornerstone of terrifying monster movies, delivering five pulse-pounding episodes that have both frightened audiences to their cores and provided entertainment for an entire generation. After much anticipation, a fresh Anaconda film is being developed, but it might not turn out to be exactly what fans envisioned.
The upcoming movie, titled “Anaconda“, is jointly penned and helmed by Tom Gormican (known for “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent“) and narrates the story of a gang of friends grappling with midlife crises. In an attempt to alleviate their despondency, they opt to recreate a beloved film from yesteryears. Armed with a camera and ambition, they venture into the jungle, oblivious to the fact that the experiences they’ll have in the wilderness might instead amplify their perilous predicament.
At South by Southwest, Paul Rudd, known for his role in “Anaconda” alongside top-tier actors, sat down with Steve Weintraub from Collider to discuss his upcoming A24 dark comedy titled “Death of a Unicorn.” When asked about the movie, Rudd made it clear that it is not a remake of the 1997 classic. He drew parallels between this new project and Tom Gormican’s previous film featuring Nicolas Cage, suggesting its humorous nature. In other words, he was implying that “Death of a Unicorn” would have a similar comedic vibe to that previous movie.
This upcoming film shares the same director as “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” maintaining a similar meta-comedy tone. It revolves around a group who are big fans of the ’90s movie Anaconda, but this isn’t a remake. Instead, it’s an entirely fresh concept that will make you laugh. As for its rating, I’m not sure yet. However, we’re nearly done with production, and it’s been a fantastic journey so far!
‘Anaconda’ Might Work Better as a Standalone Film
The plan for a new Anaconda movie was first unveiled in 2020, with Columbia Pictures involved. But it wasn’t until early 2025 that the project started gaining traction. With Jack Black as the main actor, this film looks very promising, especially considering its comedic twist on the traditional monster horror genre. Indeed, a contemporary Anaconda remake featuring advanced CGI and an original plot would be fantastic. However, the 1997 movie directed by Luis Llosa holds strong nostalgic value for fans, so creating a new version that appeals to audiences could be challenging.
Paul Rudd’s assertion that the upcoming film isn’t a remake may lead viewers to lower their expectations, given that many reboots and adaptations often struggle. However, it also creates intrigue about how they will blend horror with humor in this monster movie. Despite this, Rudd appears optimistic that the film will offer a distinct viewing experience. In the 2025 production, Paul Rudd will be joined by Selton Mello (from “I’m Still Here”), Ione Skye (known for “Fever Pitch”), Thandiwe Newton (“Westworld”), Steve Zahn (“War for the Planet of the Apes”), Daniela Melchior (“The Suicide Squad”), and Ben Lawson (“Neighbours”).
