In the interview with Laura Kuenssberg, Ncuti Gatwa explained his reason for leaving Doctor Who. He stated that he is growing older and his body was feeling weary. Recently, he has also started learning ballet, which indicates that he is making wise choices. (via Radio Times)
Gatwa stated that the position was both incredible and challenging. “It’s the ultimate acting role, something every actor aspires to have. Since it’s so exceptional, it’s also taxing – it drains you physically, emotionally, and mentally. As a result, I felt it was the right moment to move on,” he elaborated.
In a behind-the-scenes clip, he spoke about the strain, both physical and emotional, that comes with portraying the Doctor. “Initially, I had always intended to complete this number of seasons,” Gatwa explained, “as it’s a role that requires a significant amount from you in terms of physical, emotional, and mental resources.” He then added, “Sadly, we who play the Doctor are just actors. I wish I could pour all my energy and vitality into this role for the rest of my life, but my body, particularly my knees, is signaling that it’s time to slow down.
When asked about possibly rejoining the series later on, Ncuti Gatwa, who played the Fifteenth Doctor until the Season 2 finale (“The Reality War”), hinted that he might return by saying “You can’t rule it out completely.” Although Billie Piper took over as a new character following his regeneration, there’s no official confirmation yet about whether she will be the next Doctor.
Gatwa clarified the rumors about his sudden decision to step down as the spokesperson for the Eurovision Song Contest. He stated that he had already withdrawn from the role before it was made public, explaining that he had a packed schedule and numerous commitments related to The Roses and Doctor Who, which left him with limited time.
