How ‘The Bear’ Fared in 2025 Emmy Nominations

The Bear didn’t quite cook in season three, but it (still) has a nice simmer going.

This past Tuesday, the popular FX show received a notable 13 Emmy Award nominations. However, when comparing it to previous years, last year’s season two of The Bear surpassed this number significantly, earning an astounding 23 nominations for a comedy series. Yes, even if you don’t categorize The Bear as a comedy, the Television Academy does. This new record shattered the previous one held by 30 Rock, which garnered 22 nominations back in 2009. It is undeniable that 30 Rock belongs to the comedy genre.

Freshman series “The Studio” matched the number of comedy nominations received by “The Bear” in its second season, both earning 23 nods.

In the previous year, it was only the FX series “Shōgun” that received more Emmy nominations than “The Bear”, with a total of 25. This current season, however, seven shows have surpassed the nomination count of “The Bear” Season 3: “Severance”, “The Penguin”, “The Studio”, “The White Lotus”, “The Last of Us”, “Andor”, and “Hacks”. Interestingly, both “Adolescence” and “The Pitt” each earned the same number of nominations as “The Bear”, which is 13 each.

In particular, the third season of “The Bear” received nominations in several categories: casting, direction (Ayo Edebiri), picture editing, acting (Jeremy Allen White for lead actor and Ayo Edebiri for lead actress), supporting roles (Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Liza Colón-Zayas), guest appearances (Jon Bernthal, Olivia Colman, and Jamie Lee Curtis), sound editing and mixing, and the notable one being outstanding comedy series.

Although The Bear garnered numerous nominations last year, it didn’t secure awards at the same rapid pace as it did during its first season.

In the September 2024 Emmy Awards, Moss-Bachrach was awarded for his role as supporting actor in a comedy series, marking his second victory in this category for the show; White bagged the award for best actor in a comedy series. Colón-Zayas secured her first Emmy for her supporting actress performance in a comedy series, making history by becoming the first Latina to win in this category. Christopher Storer received the Emmy for outstanding directing, specifically for the “Fishes” episode. Bernthal and Curtis triumphed in their respective guest categories at the Creative Arts Emmys. Unfortunately, The Bear season two was not successful in the comedy series category, losing out to Max’s Hacks – a first-time winner in this category, representing the FX program.

All told, The Bear season two won 11 Emmys; season one won 10 (out of 13 nominations).

Unlike the first two seasons, the third installment of “The Bear” didn’t get as much positive feedback. The fourth season, which debuted quite recently and received minimal promotion, saw some improvement among viewers’ ratings on Rotten Tomatoes; however, it still fell short compared to the previous season in terms of critical acclaim. Since “The Bear” airs during summer, its award season is a year delayed relative to the standard TV season, so keep an eye out for nominations for season four next year.

The 77th Emmy Awards, hosted by Nate Bargatze, will air live on September 14, 2025 on CBS.
