FLASH and AQUAMAN: NOT Coming Soon to DCU

As reported by DC Studios, two significant Justice League members won’t be joining the DC Universe right away. Instead, the nascent on-screen DC universe is setting up the groundwork for a future Justice League ensemble. The upcoming film, Superman, starring David Corenswet as Superman, also introduces Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern (Guy Gardner) and Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl, which seems to indicate the emergence of the iconic comic book team.

Of course, this has ignited curiosity and debate among DC Universe fans about when Batman might join the franchise, where Wonder Woman is currently, and what the appearance of the DCU Justice League will be like. These are just a few of the questions that have arisen following the release of Superman. Although some characters linked to the Justice League have already been updated in the new interconnected world, others may require a bit more time.

During a chat with Happy Sad Confused, the director of Superman and co-CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn, hinted that fans might need to be patient before they see The Flash and Aquaman join the DC Universe.

Responding to a query from host Josh Horowitz regarding the appearance of these two Justice League characters in the upcoming years, Gunn replied, “I don’t foresee either of these characters making an appearance within the next two years.

A: “Are we likely to witness the introduction of a new Flash or a new Aquaman within the next couple of years, or will it be some time before that happens?

A: “I wouldn’t say the next two years for either of those characters.”

As a dedicated DC Universe fan, I must admit that there’s no official announcement about new adventures featuring Flash, Aquaman, or the Justice League as a whole within our beloved universe. The only projects that are currently on the DCU slate revolve around the Green Lantern Corps in “Lanterns”, the intriguing duo explorations of “The Brave and the Bold”, and the soon-to-be-titled Wonder Woman film.

Following Superman, upcoming DC Universe titles that we can look forward to within the next 18 months or so include season 2 of Peacemaker, Supergirl, another Green Lantern project, and Clayface. Exciting times are ahead indeed!

When Will The Flash and Aquaman Make Their DCU Debuts?

In comic books, The Flash and Aquaman are among the most vital members of the Justice League according to the DC Comics universe. But this doesn’t necessarily mean they should immediately join the DC Universe in live-action adaptations.

The franchise is laying its groundwork with the debut of Superman, marking just the start. There’s no need for haste; we can take our time introducing new characters gradually.

Indeed, a common criticism leveled at the previous DC Extended Universe was that it moved too quickly and tackled too many elements all at once, which some fans found overwhelming.

Gunn and DC Studios have the flexibility to carefully develop their backstory, introduce crucial characters such as Aquaman and The Flash when they are ready.

In the universe we’re familiar with, hints have been dropped suggesting a figure similar to The Flash (or an analogue of the character) might exist. However, seeing this character materialize on screen could still be quite some time away.

Waiting for two years isn’t such a long stretch of time. The sequel to The Batman, titled The Batman Part II, is set to release within the next two years. If Aquaman or Flash were planning their own projects to be released in the following two years, don’t you think we would have heard some news about it by now?

As a seasoned movie critic, I eagerly anticipate the upcoming tales in the DC Universe, which promises to unfold over many exciting years. This rich narrative landscape opens up numerous opportunities for intriguing characters like these and others yet to be introduced to grace our screens.
