A Live-Action/CGI Rugrats Movie Is In The Works, And How Will This Not Haunt Our Dreams?

As someone who spent countless hours of my childhood glued to the TV screen, watching the adventures of Tommy Pickles and his pals, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and dread at the news of a live-action/CGI hybrid Rugrats movie. On one hand, I’m thrilled that this beloved show is getting a modern revival. On the other, I can’t shake off the image of Tommy and co. in anything but their iconic 2D forms.

If you spent your childhood in the ’90s, it’s likely that you watched some of the most acclaimed animated TV shows ever made on television. And if Nickelodeon was a regular part of your routine, then there’s a strong chance you remember watching Rugrats, and perhaps you’ve even revisited some episodes using your Paramount+ account. Exciting news for Rugrats enthusiasts: there’s a film in development that combines live-action and CGI elements. However, the mere thought of this concept might give us nightmares, right?

According to Deadline’s latest report, director Jason Moore is set to take charge of the upcoming Rugrats movie, following a script written by Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell. If this project progresses, it will mark Moore’s fourth film credit, having previously directed Pitch Perfect, Sisters, and Shotgun Wedding. He has also directed episodes for television shows such as Dawson’s Creek and Everwood, and boasts a long-standing career on Broadway with productions like Avenue Q, Shrek the Musical, and Steel Magnolias to his name.
