As a seasoned movie enthusiast with decades of horror flicks under my belt, I must say that Fede Álvarez has piqued my interest with his latest venture, “Alien: Romulus“. Having witnessed the demise of countless characters on screen, both young and old, I can attest to the emotional impact a well-crafted story can have.
Next week, I’m eagerly anticipating the chilling experience that “Alien: Romulus” promises to deliver! Director Fede Álvarez is shedding light on an ominous reason behind the youthful cast in this film. Set amidst the timeframe between the occurrences portrayed in “Alien” and “Aliens”, Álvarez’s movie serves as the seventh installment in the illustrious franchise, focusing on a band of young colonists who find themselves in deep trouble when they venture out to salvage a deserted space station, only to encounter the fearsome Xenomorphs.
As someone who has had the unfortunate experience of losing loved ones at various ages, I can attest to the profound impact that death has on us all. However, there is something uniquely heart-wrenching about witnessing the demise of young characters in horror films. The loss of an elderly person can be painful, but it’s often easier to accept due to their full lives and the natural progression of time. On the other hand, when a child or teenager perishes on screen, it feels like a cruel and unjust interruption of their promising lives, and it leaves a lasting impression that can feel almost unbearable.
It’s possible that this happens because some movies, like “Pet Sematary” and “A Quiet Place,” instantly grab audiences’ attention by killing children early on, making it more impactful due to the shock factor. On the other hand, films like “Friday the 13th” may not resonate as deeply since we don’t develop a strong emotional connection with the young campers before they meet their fate. The secret is to create well-rounded characters that viewers can identify with, so when these characters die, it carries more weight. If you merely kill off a 20-year-old without giving us a compelling reason to care about them initially, it’s challenging for the audience to feel any significant emotion.
Fede Álvarez Believes He’s Done Enough to Make Us Care

Does Álvarez construct a tale so compelling that it encourages us to empathize with its characters even as they approach their demise? Time will tell, but the director of Evil Dead thinks he has skillfully developed the characters of Cailee Spaeny (age 26), Isabela Merced (age 23), and Archie Renaux (age 26). He assures us that we’ll witness them in their everyday lives before confronting the Xenomorphs, a depiction he hopes will draw us in.
In my perspective, it serves as an entrance for envisioning life for a group of youths residing in a sci-fi colony, which is on the brink of extinction and must confront this peculiar creature. These characters are more relatable because they’re unfamiliar with the world they’re entering.
“For me, it’s never a bad time in theaters when you’re watching an Alien movie,” he added. One can only hope that his words ring true, and that Alien: Romulus is everything we’re hoping it will be, and more. Álvarez has already proven himself not only with 2013’s Evil Dead, but also with the 2016 tense horror-thriller Don’t Breathe, so if there’s anyone who can pull it off, it’s him.
Let’s hold off until August 16 when “Alien: Romulus” is released by 20th Century Studios, so we can decide if we’ll become invested in the characters. Until then, here’s a thrilling trailer you can watch below for a sneak peek at what’s ahead.
