Austin Film Festival Adds ‘The Order,’ ‘The Brutalist,’ ‘September 5’ to Lineup (Exclusive)

As a seasoned film enthusiast with a penchant for unraveling intricate narratives and appreciating artistic vision, I am absolutely thrilled about this year’s Austin Film Festival lineup! The prospect of witnessing Justin Kurzel’s neo-Nazi crime thriller, “The Order,” under the Centerpiece Film presentation is particularly enticing. Add to that the opening film, “The Piano Lesson,” starring Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington, and I can hardly contain my excitement!

The Oscar-contending films by directors Justin Kurzel (“The Order”), Brady Corbet (“The Brutalist”), and Tim Fehlbaum (“September 5”) have now been added to the list of movies to be shown at the Austin Film Festival, which has announced its initial screenings for its 31st year.

The neo-Nazi crime thriller titled “The Order” featuring Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult is set to be a Centerpiece Film presentation. Writer Zach Baylin and star Tye Sheridan are expected to be present. Kicking off the October 24th to 31st festival will be Malcolm Washington’s production of “The Piano Lesson“, which stars Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, and Danielle Deadwyler. Virgil Williams, who co-wrote the Netflix adaptation of this stage play produced by Denzel Washington, will also be in attendance.

This year’s world premieres feature a variety of exciting new films such as the paranoia-thriller “Crossword,” which is co-written, directed, and stars Michael Vlamis in his directorial debut; the folk-horror movie “The Fetch,” starring Robert Longstreet under J.C. Doler’s direction; and the comedy about conspiracy titled “Operation Taco Gary’s,” featuring Simon Rex, Dustin Milligan, Jason Biggs, and Brenda Song. Michael Kvamme is responsible for writing and directing this film.

Additionally, there are screenings in Austin for Mark Gill’s film “Ravens,” a movie focusing on the renowned Japanese photographer Masahisa Fukase and his wife Yoko, with Gill himself present; J.T. Walker’s directorial venture “La Gloria“, starring David Morse, Jaklyn Bejarano, and Bill Heck; and Toni Comas’ film “Silent Notes“, which stars Daniel Durant and Matt Riker.

At the Asian Film Festival, a unique showing of Pixar’s upcoming original series titled Dream Productions, an extension of the Inside Out movie saga slated for release on Disney+ in 2025, has been scheduled. This series delves into the “dream factory” within Riley’s mind, taking place between the events depicted in Inside Out and its sequel, Inside Out 2.

The esteemed Austin Film Festival, known as a leading event honoring writers and filmmakers in cinema, television, and digital media, will also host its annual Writers Conference this year. Notably, Robin Swicord is set to receive the 2024 Bill Wittliff Award for Screenwriting. Her impressive portfolio includes co-writing ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’ with her husband Nicholas Kazan, penning ‘Matilda’, an Academy Award nomination for ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’, and collaborating with Ava DuVernay on the Netflix miniseries ‘When They See Us’.
