Previously this year, a significant player in Hollywood’s financing sector, Village Roadshow, sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, citing expensive internal content production and deteriorating partnership with Warner Bros. as reasons.
Following the submission of the filing, an auction ensued in order to attain the highest possible value for Village Roadshow’s assets. Alcon Entertainment emerged victorious with their bid surpassing Content Partners’ offer of $365 million. One of the unanswered questions pertains to whether a fee will be required should there be a breakup.
Buying this property makes Alcon the proprietor of a vast independent movie library, containing films such as “Blade Runner 2049,” “The Blind Side,” and “Prisoners.
Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove, the co-CEOs of AMG and its film production and financing division Alcon Entertainment, expressed their delight about acquiring Village Roadshow’s collection of major studio distributed feature films. These movies complement Alcon’s current library nicely. They also mentioned they plan to seize future opportunities as more appealing assets emerge in the market.
The sale encompasses a lineup of films and TV shows under development, but there’s uncertainty about the studio side of the business. Since 2018, the company has been working on 99 feature films and 233 television series in pre-production. However, out of these, only 6 movies and 7 TV shows actually moved into production, costing a total of $47.5 million. Unfortunately, none of them managed to make a profit, raising questions about the viability of the company’s self-produced content initiative.
