As I, a gamer, find myself in an unfamiliar courtroom setting, it’s clear that my days of representing high-profile clients like Michael Jackson, Sean Combs, and the Menendez brothers have taken a turn. The verdict is in: I’ve got to cough up $100,000 to a basketball coach, due to my role in the 2018 Nike extortion case. This isn’t part of my usual gaming life, but it seems like another level in this real-life game we call life.
It’s been claimed that Gary Franklin asserted that lawyers Mark Geragos and Michael Avenatti (who was later disbarred) sabotaged a $1.5 million settlement deal. They did this by using information from a lawsuit about alleged misconduct in youth basketball, which Franklin had made confidential, to force Nike to pay an additional $10 million for an internal investigation of the company. This demand eventually led law enforcement to become involved. The story ultimately resulted in Avenatti receiving a 2 ½-year prison sentence, with federal prosecutors at one point labeling Geragos as an unindicted co-conspirator.
In response to a lawsuit filed against him, Geragos asserted that the agreement’s mishandling was due to the carelessness of Michael Jackson’s legal team. He maintains his innocence in this matter.
On Thursday, the jury decided not to support allegations that Geragos knowingly hid information from Franklin or committed fraud. The verdict was based on evidence showing that Geragos aided Avenatti in an attempt to extort money from Nike, thereby violating his obligations to Franklin.
The size of the award gave room for both sides to declare victory.
Following the verdict, Geragos expressed that it was nearly equivalent to validation,” stated the Daily Journal.
Trent Copeland, representing Franklin, stated plainly that “the jury’s verdict can’t be twisted around.” He further noted that while Geragos managed to dodge criminal accusations, a civil court found him responsible. This was based on the conclusion that Geragas breached a duty of trust and knowingly helped Michael Avenatti in committing misconduct.
More recently, Geragos, who couldn’t be reached for a comment, has been making news for spearheading the campaign to free the Menendez brothers. Additionally, he was an informal part of Combs’ defense team during his sex trafficking trial, collaborating with Combs’ legal team, which included his daughter, Teny Geragos.
