The Dexter franchise continues to deliver audiences for Showtime and Paramount+.
In its debut weekend from July 11th to 13th, the newest installment of the series titled “Dexter: Resurrection” attracted a total of 3.1 million viewers across all platforms. The story revolves around the main character, played by Michael C. Hall, who surprisingly didn’t meet his end in the final episode of “Dexter: New Blood“. Given this unexpected turn of events, the title “_Resurrection_” is fitting for the new show. This time, the story takes our protagonist to the bustling metropolis of New York City.
The number of viewers, approximately 3.1 million, who watched the cross-platform series (calculated by dividing the total global viewing time by the runtime, commonly referred to as views in the industry) significantly surpasses the initial viewership of the latest Dexter prequel, “Original Sin,” which premiered with about 2.1 million viewers during its first three days in December 2024.
In the world of premium cable shows, I’m no stranger to the fact that most viewers prefer streaming. For instance, the debut of Dexter: Resurrection on Showtime only managed to attract around 221,000 viewers through traditional TV viewings. However, the story takes a different turn when we consider streaming. An impressive 2.88 million viewers, which is about 93% of the opening weekend total, chose this route.
Interestingly, Paramount+ claims that Dexter: Resurrection holds the title for the most streamed premiere in Showtime’s history, a record previously held by Original Sin. It’s worth noting that they recently changed the name of their ad-free tier from “With Showtime” to “Paramount+ Premium.”
In a statement, Chris McCarthy, co-CEO of Paramount Global and president of Showtime/MTV Entertainment, praised the revival of ‘Dexter: Resurrection’, saying it not only reignited a passionate fanbase but also attracted a fresh wave of viewers. The premiere broke streaming records for Showtime, marking its most-watched debut to date. This success highlights the enduring influence of this renowned franchise and the exceptional performance by Michael C. Hall, as well as the creative vision of showrunner Clyde Phillips.
Phillips’ executive team collaborates with Hall, Scott Reynolds, Tony Hernandez, Lilly Burns, and Marcos Siega on the production. Notably, Monica Raymund and Siega took turns directing several episodes throughout the season.
