Emmy Nominations 2025: Historic, Record-Breaking and Otherwise Notable Nominees

2025’s Emmy nominations saw a significant increase in first-time contenders, diversity in representation, as well as the oldest and youngest nominees ever recognized, among other notable achievements.

Martin Scorsese, Harrison Ford, Adam Brody and Kristen Bell, Cooper Koch, along with others, are all first-time Emmy Award nominees this year. Notably, Owen Cooper is the youngest nominee in his category, while Kathy Bates has earned a historic nomination as the oldest in hers.

As a passionate admirer, I can’t help but celebrate Bella Ramsey (from “The Last of Us”) for her groundbreaking moment in the LGBTQ+ community with her subtle, yet impactful nod. On another exciting note, this year brings an intriguing twist as music powerhouse couple Jay-Z and Beyoncé find themselves going head-to-head in the Emmy race! What a time to be a fan!

In the competition, it’s “Severance” that takes the lead with a total of 27 nominations. Close behind is “The Penguin,” which garnered 24 nominations, while “The White Lotus” and “The Studio” follow closely, each receiving 23 nominations apiece.

This upcoming Sunday, September 14th, the Emmy Awards – hosted by Nate Bargatze – will be broadcast live on CBS, straight from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT. To see the full list of nominees, click here.

Bella Ramsey Is the First Openly Nonbinary Performer to Get Multiple Emmy Noms

I’m thrilled to share that “The Last of Us” season 2 has made history with a whopping 16 Emmy nominations! Among these, Bella Ramsey, who portrayed Ellie Williams, earned their second Emmy nod – but this time, it was historic. They became the first openly nonbinary performer to secure more than one Emmy nomination! Their exceptional performance in the drama actress category has been acknowledged and honored.

Previously, Ramsey expressed their views on gender-specific awards, mentioning they weren’t offended when nominated alongside males at the 2023 Emmys. They further emphasized the significance of preserving recognition for women in the industry, stating that the debate about gendered categories is fascinating. They admitted they don’t have a solution and wish there was an easy way around it, but they believe it’s crucial to maintain both female and male award categories.

Noah Wyle Earns First Nomination in 26 Years

On Tuesday, Noah Wyle earned a nomination as the best actor in a drama for his role in “The Pitt.” This isn’t his first time being nominated, but this Emmy recognition marks a 26-year gap since his last nomination as an actor. Between 1995 and 1999, Wyle was nominated five times for his work on “ER,” but it took more than two decades to secure another nomination.

Pedro Pascal Lands Best Drama Actor Nom With Very Little Screen Time

In a surprising turn of events, reminiscent of those unfamiliar with the video game it was based on, Pedro Pascal’s character Joel Miller met his gruesome end in episode two of the second season of The Last of Us. Despite appearing only in two additional episodes this season through flashbacks, Pascal’s performance earned him a nomination for best drama actor.

Among all the nominees this year, Pascal had the shortest amount of screen time compared to Sterling K. Brown, Gary Oldman, Adam Scott, and Noah Wyle. Yet, it’s not unprecedented for the Academy to recognize someone with limited appearances in a lead acting category. Remember Brian Cox, who was nominated for best drama actor in 2023 for “Succession”? Despite being only in three episodes of the Emmy-winning series, both Cox and Pascal managed to make significant impacts that didn’t deter their nominations.

    Welcome the First-Time Nominees

This year, a number of newcomers have been nominated for Emmys. Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti are up for their roles in “The Penguin”; Owen Cooper and Stephen Graham for “Adolescence”; Jake Gyllenhaal for “Presumed Innocent”; Cooper Koch, Javier Bardem, and Chloë Sevigny for “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story”; Adam Brody and Kristen Bell for “Nobody Wants This”; J.K. Simmons for “Die Hart: Hart to Kill”; Tom Segura for “Bad Thoughts”; and Jason Isaacs and Scott Glenn for “The White Lotus”.

Immediately following the announcement of her nod, Milioti expressed her excitement about the series to THR, saying, “I am absolutely ecstatic for our show! It’s always uncertain how things will unfold, and I’m truly astonished by the number of nominations we received and that so many talented members of our exceptional team were recognized.

Koch shared with THR his disappointment that Ari Graynor and Nicholas Alexander Chavez, his co-stars in Monsters, weren’t nominated. “I spoke with Ari, and I’m deeply saddened she didn’t receive a nomination,” he said. “It’s one of the disappointing aspects of today. Similarly, I believe both of them truly deserved recognition, so I’m quite disappointed they didn’t get nominated.

Kathy Bates Is Oldest Best Drama Actress Nominee

77-year-old actress Kathy Bates is breaking records in Hollywood. This year, she secured a nomination in the Best Drama Actress category for her role as Madeline “Matty” Matlock in the courtroom drama Matlock. Although she’s previously won two Emmys, one for her guest appearance on Two and a Half Men and another for her portrayal of Madame Delphine LaLaurie in American Horror Story: Coven, this nomination marks the oldest nominee ever in the drama actress category. She’s competing against Sharon Horgan (Bad Sisters), Britt Lower (Severance), Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us) and Keri Russell (The Diplomat)).

Previously, the actress who played Misery expressed to THR that this production took her by surprise since she hadn’t planned on spearheading it originally. In fact, she had been contemplating semi-retirement, casually waiting for something interesting to come along and catch her attention.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z Compete Against Each Other

In the Knowles-Carter family household, a unique milestone is unfolding – both Beyoncé and her husband Jay-Z are nominated in the same category for outstanding variety special (live). Beyoncé’s nomination came from her spectacular halftime show at the NFL’s Christmas Day game on Netflix, which has been dubbed as the Beyoncé Bowl. On the other hand, Jay-Z is an executive producer for Kendrick Lamar’s Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show. Notably, Kendrick Lamar has previously won two primetime Emmys. If Beyoncé wins this award, it would mark her first victory in this category.

The Studio Ties With The Bear for Most Noms for a Comedy Series

Previously, “The Bear” had the record for most awards nominations in a single year for a comedy series, with 23 nods it received last season. However, this year, it faced its equal in Seth Rogen’s “The Studio,” which also garnered 23 nominations. Among “The Studio’s” nominations were best comedy series, best actor in a comedy series for Rogen, best supporting actress in a comedy series for Kathryn Hahn and Catherine O’Hara, and several other categories. The show almost swept the best guest actor in a comedy series category, as Bryan Cranston, Dave Franco, Ron Howard, Anthony Mackie, Martin Scorsese, and Jon Bernthal from “The Bear” were all nominated for their performances in “The Studio.

Martin Scorsese and Ron Howard Score First Acting Noms

Martin Scorsese and Ron Howard are primarily known for their filmmaking skills and winning Oscars, but they’ve recently been honored for their acting talent too. Both directors received their initial acting nominations for Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series, thanks to their performances in the show The Studio. Previously, Howard has won Emmys for his role as an executive producer on Arrested Development and Curious George, and for directing the documentary Jim Henson: Idea Man. Similarly, Scorsese has previously taken home Emmys for directing George Harrison: Living in the Material World and an episode of Boardwalk Empire.

SNL Extends Emmys Record — Again

On Saturday, once again, Saturday Night Live demonstrated its Emmy Awards supremacy by increasing its record for the most nominations of any program. To date, the well-established sketch comedy series has been recognized a total of 372 times, with 31 nods this year across both its standard episodes and SNL50 specials.

Julianne Nicholson and Catherine O’Hara Are Seeing Double

This year, Julianne Nicholson received two Emmy nominations for different roles. She was nominated for ‘Best Actress in a Comedy Series’ for the show ‘Hacks’, and also for ‘Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series’ for ‘Paradise’. Similarly, Catherine O’Hara was recognized with two nominations as well. She was nominated for ‘Best Guest Actress in a Drama Series’ for ‘The Last of Us’, and also for ‘Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series’ for ‘The Studio’.

Adolescence Star Owen Cooper Makes History With Nomination

Fifteen-year-old actor Owen Cooper, known for his role in the popular show “Adolescence”, has made history as the youngest nominee in his category – best supporting actor in a miniseries or TV film. If he wins, Cooper would also break records by becoming the youngest male winner of any acting Emmy award ever.
