As a seasoned cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of historical dramas and fantasy epics, I found myself captivated by the vibrant and imaginative world of “My Lady Jane.” Having always been fascinated by alternate histories and the enigmatic figure of Lady Jane Grey, England’s nine-days queen, this series struck a chord with me on many levels.
George R.R. Martin, renowned author of ‘Game of Thrones’, endorses the terminated Amazon Prime series ‘My Lady Jane’. This approval could shift the course of a fervent but unsuccessful plea by fans to revive the enchanting romance for another season. After receiving widespread acclaim upon its June debut, ‘My Lady Jane’ was unfortunately axed by Amazon Prime, a decision that many deemed hasty. The termination sparked multiple petitions advocating for the show’s reinstatement.
Yesterday evening, Martin shared his admiration for the series “My Lady Jane” on his non-blog platform, appreciating its unique narrative even as some viewers noted similarities to “Bridgerton” due to their historical settings. However, he emphasized the “alternative history” element of “My Lady Jane” as one of its distinctive traits and applauded showrunner Meredith Glynn for her creative work. Interestingly, Martin mentioned that he had previously collaborated with Glynn on a potential HBO spinoff of “Game of Thrones,” which did not come to fruition. He also expressed his dismay over Amazon Prime Video‘s decision to cancel “My Lady Jane” and acknowledged the fans’ relentless efforts in attempting to revive the show.
Regarding television series, my affinity for alternate history and the intriguing figure of Jane Grey, often referred to as England’s nine-days queen, has always been strong. Consequently, I found myself greatly enjoying MY LADY JANE, a creative and unique historical fantasy available on Amazon Prime. This series takes place in an England brimming with witches and shapechangers, where Jane reigns for longer than her historically recorded nine days… Humorous and inventive, it brought to mind THE GREAT, another show I held dear.
My Lady Jane is a creative reimagining of the tale of Lady Jane Grey, who became queen for just nine days before her execution by Queen Mary I, also known as “Bloody Mary.” In this series, set in an imaginary 16th century England, magic and mythical beings like witches and shapeshifters roam freely. The main character, Lady Jane, is portrayed by actress Emily Bader, along with other historical figures such as King Edward VI (Jordan Peters) and Princess Mary (Kate O’Flynn).
According to Prime, the series “My Lady Jane” was terminated because of low viewership. This explanation seemed to fuel fans’ anger more, leading them to express their opinions on X. These viewers argued that the cancellation happened just two months after the show’s debut, which they believed was too soon for audiences to fully discover and develop affection for the series.
Why Martin’s Opinion of My Lady Jane Matters
With over 60,000 signatures on a Change.org petition asking for the renewal of “My Lady Jane,” it seems that Amazon Prime Video may be hard-pressed to disregard the fervent wishes of its viewers. However, given the unprecedented success of “Game of Thrones” and its spinoffs, an endorsement from George R.R. Martin carries significant influence that is hard to overlook. Previous fan campaigns for reviving canceled shows have not been successful, but given Martin’s status as a pop culture titan with a vast fanbase, his approval could encourage Amazon Prime to reconsider their decision and potentially attract fans of “Game of Thrones.
As a die-hard movie lover, I can’t help but feel the weight of uncertainty when it comes to influencing giants like Amazon Prime Video. Although some passionate fan movements have successfully revived shows, such as the unforgettable outcry that saved Brooklyn Nine-Nine, many others haven’t been so fortunate. While Martin’s praise for My Lady Jane is undeniably a ray of hope in our battle to keep it alive, it remains challenging to predict just how effective this particular fan campaign will be.
Lady Jane, the series, is still available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video. However, keep in mind that you might grow fond of the characters but be prepared for unexpected twists.
