Although how much money a movie makes in theaters is often used to measure its success, a box office failure doesn’t always mean a film will be completely forgotten. In this particular case, the movie’s advertising actually hindered it, and it didn’t receive much attention.
Despite initially flying under the radar, the horror comedy Jennifer’s Body, starring Megan Fox, has become a beloved cult film. Fans have rediscovered it years later and are eager for a sequel. Director Karyn Kusama and writer Diablo Cody have frequently expressed their affection for the movie and their desire to make a follow-up. Now, according to reports, Jennifer’s Body 2 is officially happening – a welcome announcement for those who’ve been hoping for it.
Kusama talked about the exciting and unique plans they have for the next installment. She also hinted that development is progressing well.
She’s currently developing the project, and I’ve heard bits and pieces of the story,” Kusama shared. “I won’t spoil anything, but it seems like it will be as exciting and unconventional as the original movie. I’m confident Diablo will create something amazing.
The director acknowledged the film faced challenges, but expressed deep gratitude that it eventually connected with viewers. While it took longer than anticipated to find its audience, she was very happy that people were still responding to the work and found it meaningful.
She admitted the film’s continued success was surprising, but very welcome. She laughed, saying it was amusing to think of Jennifer’s Body being considered as important as a classic film she admired – like The Godfather. The idea that it could be someone’s all-time favorite really pleased her.
Jennifer’s Body Had an Underwhelming Reception
This horror movie centers around a popular cheerleader who becomes possessed by a demon and develops a taste for human flesh. Surprisingly, despite initially being poorly received, the film has since gained a reputation as a story of female empowerment. However, it wasn’t a financial success, earning just $31.6 million at the box office despite costing $16 million to make.
Despite tackling feminist ideas and female empowerment, the movie Jennifer’s Body initially received poor reviews. It seemed to be marketed towards young men, rather than the audience it was actually meant for. Critics gave it a low 47% rating, and viewers only rated it 36%. However, the film has recently gained a lot of popularity on streaming platforms.
Jennifer’s Body is streaming on Hulu.
