Jensen Ackles is currently gracing our screens in Prime Video’s upcoming series titled “Countdown“, scheduled for 2025. This gripping crime drama, created by Derek Haas from “Chicago Fire“, has been keeping viewers hooked with its thrilling action sequences, even though it has only aired six episodes so far. The series has quickly established its credibility and popularity among viewers. In an interview, Ackles shared his favorite action scene in “Countdown” that stands out more than any other he’s done on “The Boys“.
A Supernatural graduate is accustomed to performing daring feats, having spent 15 years being bashed and dishing it out against demons and other supernatural beings. Then there’s The Boys, which ramps up the action and stunts with superheroes and explosions, and now Countdown. In the latest episodes of Countdown, his character, Detective Mark Meechum, has faced off against criminals and even surfed on top of a truck. When asked by TVLine about his favorite stunt, Ackles found himself torn between the two, but also expressing how thrilling one was.
It’s clear I enjoyed both activities, but I must admit that surfing on the trailer was exceptionally thrilling. I have had plenty of experiences with hand-to-hand combat scenes, which are undeniably enjoyable, but they require a great deal of precision and attention to detail. You need to ensure you land correctly and execute the right moves, or else you might slip up and get an unexpected elbow. Those days can be quite sweaty as we often have to shoot multiple takes, leaving me drenched in perspiration by the end.
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I must say, it’s nothing short of amazing to witness Jared Padalecki, aka Sam Winchester on Supernatural, performing his own stunts. It’s not a walk in the park, let me tell you! While he’s no stranger to jaw-dropping stunts on The Boys, like fighting, using superpowers, flying, and even faking death, nothing quite compares to the adrenaline rush of surfing on a speeding truck without getting tossed off. Hearing him recount his experience filming that sequence only deepens my respect for stunt artists and their fearless craft.
In simpler terms, what I’m saying is that the scene on top of the trailer was quite different because there were wires and various activities happening. However, all you needed to do was hold on tight. During filming, I had to pretend to fall off and swing my legs to the side, which was part of the plan. I was harnessed with a line that went around my chest, and they dropped an anchor in the center of the trailer so I wouldn’t actually fall off, but it still felt like hanging over the edge of a cliff with someone holding onto me. It was a bit scary, but it was also exciting.
It’s worth noting that while Ackles’ character navigates through numerous challenging situations involving combat, pursuit, and capture, he is simultaneously battling migraines and concealing a large brain tumor. Despite Ackles himself being in good health, the knowledge that Mark Meechum could be putting himself at risk of severe injury or even permanent harm adds an extra layer of intensity to the stunts, making them agonizing to watch, but undoubtedly thrilling to execute.
Looking ahead, there are just a few more thrilling episodes left for “Countdown”, and it’s hard to predict what other surprises might come as the city of Los Angeles remains under threat. Given Jensen Ackles’ fondness for daring stunts, he likely can’t wait to perform even more when filming on the prequel series “Vought Rising” begins, although nothing may quite match the excitement of being atop a truck.
On Wednesdays, you can stream new episodes of Countdown with your Amazon Prime membership. In the upcoming fifth and last season of The Boys, fans will get to see more of Ackles as he returns to play Soldier Boy.
