Netflix Casts Yerin Ha as Benedict’s Love Interest in ‘Bridgerton’ Season 4

As a seasoned gamer and avid fan of historical dramas, I must say that the casting decision for Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha) in Bridgerton Season 4 is nothing short of brilliant! The show’s creators have not only stayed true to the source material but have also shown incredible respect for Ha’s cultural background by giving her character a Korean surname.

Bridgerton season four has cast its Sophie Beckett — or, in this case, Sophie Baek.

On Wednesday, Netflix revealed that actress Yerin Ha, known for her roles in ‘Halo’ and ‘Dune: Prophecy’, has been cast as Benedict Bridgerton’s love interest in the upcoming season of the popular show. This season will center around the romantic tale of the second-eldest Bridgerton brother.

In the world of Julia Quinn’s books, I, as a character named Sophie Beckett, was a part of the storyline. But when it came to the TV series adaptation, our showrunner Jess Brownell collaborated with actress Ha to give my character a Korean surname instead, showing respect for Ha’s cultural heritage since she herself is Korean-Australian.

Ha shared with Netflix’s Tudum that a name represents the initial piece of one’s identity revealed to the world, and altering it can be incredibly impactful. For Ha, making Sophie’s name reflect her own appearance felt incredibly empowering. Kudos to Jess for this thoughtful choice.

As a fan, I was thrilled when the showrunner personally requested that I suggest some Korean surnames starting with ‘B’. Among them, she chose ‘Baek’, which feels incredibly fitting for me. It’s more than just a name; it gives me a sense of belonging to the role, rather than having to conform to a certain stereotype. The psychological impact of this simple choice is profound, and I can’t help but appreciate Jess for considering my comfort in such a thoughtful way.

Based on Tudum’s report, Sophie – previously recognized by Benedict as the Lady in Silver – has endured unfortunate circumstances that compelled her to work under a harsh employer within the ‘Ton for most of her life. However, a significant shift occurs when she conceals her identity and attends Violet Bridgerton’s (Ruth Gemmell) masquerade ball, where guests are invited to assume any persona they desire. It is at this event that she encounters Benedict.

What attracted me to Sophie is that she’s always facing challenges, things she must continually overcome,” she shared with Tudum following a hectic day of Bridgerton rehearsals. “Either it’s the struggle over social standing or concealing her emotions towards Benedict.

As a gamer putting my gaming skills to use in the world of dance, I’ve started practicing my moves alongside my partner. In a friendly banter, I jested that I’ve only managed to tread on my partner’s toes just once – a small fumble, but a good sign we’re getting along. The lessons have been truly unique and raw, as dancing feels like an emotional extension of ourselves, a way to connect more deeply with each other.

Entering a production where the cast members were already familiar with each other, brought on some “nervous excitement” for Ha, however, as she began to interact with her colleagues, they warmly embraced her. Claudia Jessie, who plays Eloise Bridgerton, crafted a bookmark for her as a friendly gesture. Nicola Coughlan, the actress behind Penelope Bridgerton, and Hannah Dodd, portraying Francesca Bridgerton, extended their support even before meeting Ha; they had already reached out to her, assuring her that she could approach them for assistance if required.

To a newcomer, this implies a great deal,” Ha explained, “it’s incredibly heartwarming. I feel incredibly lucky and thankful to be a part of such a wonderful group.

During a chat about upcoming seasons of ‘Bridgerton’ with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Brownell hinted at what lies ahead for the character Benedict.

Brownell mentioned that the narrative will likely focus on Benedict figuring out his place in the world. Towards the end of the season, Benedict discusses his desire for casual relationships with Lady Tilley Arnold. In a poignant manner, she responds, “It’s alright, but it was wonderful to have a goal once.” The expression on Benedict’s face as portrayed by Luke Thompson is profoundly moving, conveying the impact of her words deeply.

She added, “I believe Benedict has a wealth of diverse experiences in his life, yet he’s never truly devoted himself to anything. It seems he’s coming to understand that he also yearns for meaning, or depth. Exploring how Benedict balances breadth with depth is a topic we’ll delve into quite intensely in the upcoming seasons.
