As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in narratives, I can confidently say that the synopsis of “Oh, Canada” promises a cinematic journey that’s as captivating as any virtual quest I’ve embarked on. The blend of real-life legends like Richard Gere and Uma Thurman with a story that grapples with themes of aging, memory, and mortality is a recipe for an unforgettable experience.
Kino Lorber now owns the distribution rights for ‘Oh, Canada’, a film directed by Paul Schrader, in North America. This project reunites Richard Gere and Schrader, who previously worked together on the movie ‘American Gigolo’.
In this movie, actor Gere takes on the role of an American filmmaker who moved to Montreal as a refugee escaping the Vietnam draft, and he aims to clarify some things once and for all through his last interview. This film, which depicts a man reflecting on his lasting impact while confronting the end of his days, features Uma Thurman, Jacob Elordi, and Michael Imperioli in supporting roles. It made its premiere in competition at Cannes.
“Lisa Schwartz, head of theatrical acquisitions and distribution at Kino Lorber, praised ‘Canada’ as a magnificent artistic masterpiece by Paul Schrader. She described it as a deeply thought-provoking, boldly innovative exploration of aging, memory, and mortality, brought to life powerfully by Richard Gere’s captivating performance.”
As a passionate admirer, I’m thrilled to share that my anticipated film, “Oh, Canada,” will be gracing the screens at both the Toronto Film Festival and the New York Film Festival. Excitingly, Kino Lorber has plans for an awards season theatrical release in December this year. The story for this film was masterfully penned and directed by Schrader, inspired by Russell Banks’ 2021 novel “Foregone.”
The novel “Affliction” by Banks served as the basis for Schrader’s 1997 movie adaptation titled the same, featuring Nick Nolte and James Coburn in lead roles. The distribution agreement for the film “Oh, Canada” was finalized through negotiations between Kino Lorber’s Schwartz and David Gonzales, along with WME Independent acting on behalf of the filmmakers.
“Canada, the film you’re about to see, is a collaborative effort between Arclight Films International, Northern Lights, Vested Interest, Ottocento, Left Home Productions, Exemplary Films, Carte Blanche Entertainment, One Two Twenty Entertainment, and Sipur Studios.”
The movie is brought to you by the team of David Gonzales, Tiffany Boyle, Luisa Law, Meghan Hanlon, and Scott Lastaiti.
