As a seasoned crypto investor with a fair share of experiences under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of relief and appreciation for David Schwartz’s quick thinking and sharp instincts. The phishing scam he narrowly avoided was a chilling reminder of the sophistication and cunningness of cybercriminals in today’s digital landscape.
David Schwartz, the CTO of Ripple, came close to falling victim to a complex phishing scheme designed to gain access to his Apple ID. The scammers used his email address and phone number to set up a convincing fake Apple support interaction, making their trick appear legitimate.
As an analyst, I would advise paraphrasing it this way: I analyzed the communication methods used by the individuals, which involved sending texts that closely resembled official Apple messages. They also employed authentic email templates and designed their websites to mirror Apple’s authentic look.
Although the deception appeared convincing at first glance, Schwartz shrewdly unmasked the fraud. He pinpointed it through the sloppy messages which deviated from Apple’s usual polished communication style. This incident underscores the growing importance of staying alert, especially when faced with apparently trustworthy solicitations for data.
As a researcher, I was taken aback when I received an SMS message with poor grammar that originated from a known suspect phone number. However, my surprise turned into confusion when I opened the linked email. To my astonishment, it appeared to be genuine as it led me to real Apple.com web pages and contained a support case with my email address already filled in.

Ripple and Tech Community Respond
As a cryptocurrency analyst, I’m observing an ongoing development within the Ripple community. Amid their persistent efforts to curb digital scams, they have teamed up with Meta and leading cryptocurrency exchanges. The newest collaborative project, “Tech Against Scams,” is designed to strengthen our defenses against increasingly sophisticated and targeted phishing attempts, specifically targeting individuals in influential tech positions.
Schwartz’s encounter is a significant warning about the ongoing danger of phishing schemes and the need to stay vigilant when dealing with any communication that asks for confidential data.
