Judge Dredd. Taika Waititi.
This week, I’ve got the gaming world buzzing as my package, one of the most anticipated releases of the year, has hit the market. The heads of studios and executives are taking notice!
Taika Waititi, director of “Thor: Ragnarok” and “Jojo Rabbit,” has been assigned to helm a fresh cinematic adaptation of the well-known and gruesome British comic book character, Dredd.
Drew Pearce, famed for his action-packed filmography including hits like “Fall Guy” and “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” has been signed on for scriptwriting duties.
The individuals who have the rights to Dredd are Chris Kingsley, Jason Kingsley, and Ben Smith from Rebellion Developments, Roy Lee from Vertigo Entertainment, as well as Jeremy Platt, Natalie Viscuso, and Pearce.
Ever since we’ve been pals, Pearce and I have shared a passion for these captivating books we grew up reading. Over the years, we’ve been on the lookout for that perfect project to collaborate on. Now, it seems like our hunt has finally paid off!
In the late 70s, character Dredd was born on the pages of the British anthology 2000 AD, penned by John Wagner and illustrated by Carlos Ezquerra. This tough cop patrols the grimy metropolis of Mega-City One, a future city where officers possess the authority to act as judge, jury, and executioner. Dredd’s stories served as a biting commentary on an exaggerated judicial system. The character quickly gained massive popularity, spawning numerous comics, comic strips, video games, board games, books, and even British postage stamps. It is estimated that over 100 million copies of Dredd’s comics and graphic novels have been sold worldwide.
Back in 1995, I found myself as a character getting the full-blown Hollywood treatment, complete with a high-budget adaptation that had Sylvester Stallone leading the cast. Unfortunately, it didn’t go down well with fans. However, in 2012, things took a turn for the better when Karl Urban stepped into my boots for a reboot titled Dredd. Alex Garland, who wrote masterpieces like 28 Days Later, was responsible for penning the script. Not only that, but he also wrote and directed Civil War. Needless to say, this adaptation received a much warmer welcome.
The logline for the film is being kept under wraps, but it’s said to draw inspiration more from the comic books than previous screen adaptations. The focus will be on world-building and dark humor. The goal is to create a fun sci-fi blockbuster that reflects current cultural trends. There are plans to make this film the starting point for a Dredd universe, with potential for additional movies and series on different platforms.
The plot of the upcoming movie is being kept secret, but it’s said to be based more on the comics than previous versions. It will have elements of humor and focus on world-building. The aim is to create an exciting sci-fi film that reflects current culture. They hope this movie will kick off a Dredd universe with future movies and shows on various platforms.
