The Watchers Sucked but It’s Sort of Getting a Sequel

As a film enthusiast with a penchant for the macabre and a soft spot for unconventional storytelling, I must confess that my initial reaction to “The Watchers” was one of disillusionment. However, much like a moth drawn to a flickering flame, I find myself intrigued by the upcoming sequel novel, “Stay in the Light.”

Spoilers ahead for The Watchers.

Following Ishana Night Shyamalan’s initial directorial venture, “The Watchers,” which left both critics and viewers underwhelmed, the narrative will carry on in a novel format. The upcoming book, titled “Stay in the Light,” penned by A.M. Shine, serves as a sequel to the movie. Set for release on October 22, “Stay in the Light” is expected to delve deeper into the world of Mina and her battle against the Watchers.

In “Stay in the Light,” Mina carries on from where she left off in “The Watchers,” having managed to break free from her captors. This sequel promises to explore more intensely her struggle for survival psychologically. The book’s summary hints at a tense follow-up, suggesting that “After her harrowing encounter with the Watchers, Mina has fled to a cottage along Ireland’s western coast. Overwhelmed by her past, she becomes consumed with researching her former captors, hoping to find some means of safeguarding humanity further.”

When Mina meets a mysterious individual close to her residence, she is filled with apprehension – for this person does not appear as they truly are. Not long after, people Mina has interacted with start going missing. Mina senses that the Watchers’ influence is escalating. She runs for her very existence, but when she voices her concerns, her mental stability is called into question. Will she be able to persuade others that the Watchers exist and are poised to attack, or will she endure the destiny she has feared since her initial encounter with those ominous entities?

Differences Between the Film and the Original Novel

In a nutshell, M. Night Shyamalan’s movie (released in 2021) is based on A.M. Shine’s novel of the same title from that year. The film stars Dakota Fanning, Georgia Campbell, and Oliver Finnegan, and it revolves around Mina, a 28-year-old artist who finds herself lost in a forest. Each night, she and three other survivors are pursued by enigmatic creatures. Unfortunately, the movie didn’t fare well, earning $33 million globally against a production budget of $30 million. It received mixed reviews from critics (32%) and audiences (52%) on Rotten Tomatoes.

The 2024 movie version of “The Watchers” deviates noticeably from its source novel, with a more explicit portrayal of the Watchers compared to the original. In the book, the author intentionally leaves their appearance vague and disturbing, allowing readers to fill in the details using their imagination. However, in the film, there are specific visual representations of these enigmatic beings.

In the movie, these characters seem monstrous, with elongated fingers and sharp claws. Interestingly, the ending differs from the book – instead of facing off with Ciara directly, Mina uncovers a surprising truth: she’s been conversing with Madeline all along, who has been impersonating Ciara! In the novel, however, there’s a less complicated scenario where Mina manages to convince Madeline peacefully without using force.

In the upcoming continuation, we’ll be incorporating traditional horror aspects that initially captivated audiences, giving it a chilling and enticing feel similar to the original tale.
