Thunderbolts* Director on Why Marvel Decided to Kill Taskmaster in Act 1

In a recent interview, director Jake Schreier has shared insights on why Marvel opted to eliminate the character of Taskmaster during the initial act of the Marvel Cinematic Universe film, “Thunderbolts.

Back in May, I got to witness the thrilling premiere of Marvel’s Thunderbolts in U.S. cinemas. This stellar ensemble flick stars me (in my imagination) as Yelena Belova alongside Sebastian Stan playing Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Wyatt Russell portraying John Walker/U.S. Agent, Olga Kurylenko bringing Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster to life, Lewis Pullman embodying Bob Reynolds/Sentry, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen taking on Ava Starr/Ghost, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus donning the role of Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.

In the opening scene of Thunderbolts, Taskmaster meets a sudden end at the hands of Ava during a fierce battle involving all four characters – Ava, John, Yelena, and Taskmaster – in an underground shelter. Despite this unfortunate incident, Ava, John, and Yelena eventually join forces, while Taskmaster remains deceased for the remainder of the film.

What did Jake Schreier say about Taskmaster’s death in Thunderbolts*?

During an exclusive chat with ComingSoon, Schreier was queried about how the demise of a character such as Taskmaster will unfold in Thunderbolts*, and whether this crucial choice originates from Kevin Feige or the creative team behind the project.

Absolutely! Revising the script for a Marvel film wasn’t a decision taken lightly. It came after numerous discussions following the production halt and the strikes. We all sat down together at Marvel to reconsider our approach, focusing on areas where we felt improvements could be made. The initial draft seemed somewhat overstuffed, and lacked emotional depth. Given that this is a movie about lethal characters who’ve supposedly committed heinous acts, it was crucial for us to portray the gravity of their actions more vividly. Just hearing grunts on screen doesn’t quite hit home emotionally.

The situation seemed ripe for an unexpected move, something unanticipated yet clarifying. It was almost as if any one of them could have been involved, but it turned out to be Ava who was assigned the task. This could have been Yelena, or even Taskmaster, but it was Ava instead. The vacancy of this revelation is felt initially, and its echo is later felt when Ava and Yelena converse.

Indeed, it was difficult because Olga Kurylenko is an exceptional actress, and as you pointed out, putting aside such a toy isn’t easy. However, the decision was made for the sake of the larger storyline and ensuring our movie seemed authentic to the characters we were portraying – it’s not an R-rated film. We wanted to take these characters somewhere unexpected to show their differences and tell our unique story more effectively.

You can either stream or purchase “Thunderbolts” digitally right now, and it’s set for a 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD release on July 29, 2025.
