As a dedicated fan of women’s basketball and the WNBA, I am thrilled to my core by the record-breaking viewership numbers for this year’s All-Star Game. The excitement was palpable as Team WNBA took on Team USA, with the energy and skill on display truly showcasing the best of women’s basketball.
The WNBA All-Star Game on Saturday drew the contest’s biggest audience ever — by a huge margin.
The US women’s Olympic basketball team’s match against WNBA stars not qualified for the Paris games attracted 3.44 million viewers on ABC, marking a significant increase of 2 million more than the previous record-breaking All-Star Game viewership in 2003. This All-Star Game ranks as the third most-watched WNBA telecast in the league’s 28-year history, trailing only behind the first two nationally broadcast games in 1997.
During the last minutes of the game (from 10:30-10:43 p.m. ET), when Team WNBA triumphed over Team USA with a score of 117-109, viewership reached a high of 4.05 million. Arike Ogunbowale from the Dallas Wings was awarded the MVP title for her impressive performance in scoring a record-breaking 34 points for Team WNBA.
Among adults aged 18-49 and 25-54, as well as women in these demographics, the game received the highest rankings during the weekend.
On Saturdays, over four times as many people watched the broadcast compared to the 2023 WNBA All-Star Game, with a total of 850,000 viewers. The number of viewers for Friday’s ESPN telecast of the Skills Challenge also saw significant growth. It attracted an average of 695,000 viewers, which is more than double the 288,000 who tuned in to the 2023 event.
During its Olympic hiatus (the season restarts on August 15), the WNBA has achieved a record-breaking 16 nationally broadcast games this season that have drawn one million or more viewers, excluding those streamed on Amazon Prime Video. This surpasses the league’s previous best of 15 games with over one million viewers (including playoffs) from 1998. With seventeen more regular-season nationally televised games remaining and the playoffs to add, the WNBA is poised to set new viewership records.
