Contains spoilers for “Stranger Things” Season 5
During the upcoming holiday season, devotees of “Stranger Things” might not ponder peace, love, and goodwill to all men; instead, they’ll speculate about Eleven (played by Millie Bobby Brown) and how the series intends to resolve its intricate plotlines in the final installment. A hint of what’s to come was provided in a fresh teaser trailer, suggesting that El has acquired an extraordinary ability – she can now levitate or fly.
As a gamer, finding out that El has this new ability is quite a surprising turn of events, especially considering the powers others in the Upside Down possess. But for El, it’s something completely fresh, and given the situation, I can see that she’ll need every bit of her strength to rescue her friends.
Given that the young girl is already incredibly powerful, being granted the ability to fly would make her one of the most powerful beings the town of Hawkins has ever known. Here’s a rundown of the abilities she’s shown over the seasons of “Stranger Things” and what her newfound flight capability could imply.
It’s not too surprising that Eleven can fly
Fans of “Stranger Things” know that creatures from the Upside Down, like Demobats, can fly. Typically, humans can’t fly unassisted in this alternate reality unless they have psychic abilities, such as Eleven or Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). However, given her strong powers, it’s not hard to imagine El learning to fly. There seems to be a pattern for people with telekinetic abilities doing what El does in the trailer, but this instance showcases an advanced use of her levitation capabilities in an innovative way.
In the realm of “Stranger Things”, floating or levitation is generally a sign of trouble. It often indicates that the person is under the influence of Vecna and is likely to meet a gruesome, imminent death. For example, Chrissy (Grace Van Dien) and Max (Sadie Sink), both exhibited this floating behavior; one survived Vecna’s grip while the other did not. This phenomenon, however, suggests a past occurrence of humans flying in that world. El’s powers surpass these abilities, making her a formidable character who strikes fear into her adversaries with her extensive capabilities.
Eleven can move and levitate things through telekinesis
One of Eleven’s notable abilities is her telekinesis, which she has mastered due to her time at Hawkins Lab. With this power, she can levitate various objects, such as monsters, people, and herself – like when she fought the Demogorgon in Season 4. Additionally, she can manipulate these objects with her mind, lifting cars and hurling them as weapons, destroying monsters, and even causing discomfort to bullies by squeezing their bladders, making them wet themselves. In combat against Demodogs, she can simply flick them away with her mind. Consequently, she possesses a substantial kill count – although she doesn’t kill as many people as Henry Creel does.
As a devoted admirer, I’d describe it this way: With an effortless ease, she exerts a force that can drag entire train cars towards her. She’s not just powerful; she’s lethal, capable of shattering the very bones of those who dare to challenge her. Her ultimate show of strength? A crushing blow to the minds of adversaries, a tactic she employed effectively against several agents at Hawkins Lab during her daring escape.
Her skills surpass the ordinary, allowing her to delve into her adversaries’ minds, controlling them to walk, move, or act according to her will. She even possesses the power to halt her enemies in their tracks, immobilizing them in a fixed position. Remarkably, El has demonstrated supreme control over life itself; she revives Max when her heart stops during her battle with Vecna in Season 3. However, it’s worth noting that there are limitations to her powers in this area—while she can aid Max in survival, she cannot heal the damage inflicted by Vecna.
El has the ability to use remote viewing
El isn’t merely a telekinetic; she also possesses the unique trait of empathy, allowing her to perceive occurrences beyond her immediate surroundings, even in different dimensions. Her capacity to discern distant happenings grants her a special foresight, enabling her to potentially alter events that transpire far from her location.
This involves mind-entering, or stepping into the psychological realm of an individual to engage or converse with them. However, she isn’t just aggressive; she can also comfort her subjects by using her power to enter their minds to express care for them and ensure their safety. This is how El safeguards Max when Vecna’s curse endangers her life, and this is how she ultimately gains the advantage over Vecna. It’s essentially a form of astral projection, which El has been gradually mastering throughout Seasons 3 and 4.
El’s abilities are deeply linked to her emotional state, with outbursts of anger in particular having a significant impact on them. These emotions can also take a heavy toll, not just on her physically but also on those around her. A telltale sign of an intense use of her powers is the appearance of a nosebleed. Furthermore, her powers react to her fury or sadness by generating electrical currents.
When she fought Henry Creel in Hawkins Lab during her younger years, the intensity of the battle was so severe it led to El falling into a coma, an event that impacted her speech for much of her youth. Similar to many teenagers, El struggles with self-control over her immense talents and powers.
She can hop between dimensions
El has an extraordinary talent: she can create portals from our world to the Upside Down. This skill proves crucial in eliminating Henry Creel, who transforms into Vecna, during an attack at Hawkins Lab. In a similar manner, she opens the Mothergate by forging a mental connection with the Demogorgon in Season 4. These events are not intentional and occur under immense emotional distress on El’s part.
In truth, El hasn’t voluntarily opened a gate on her own until now. The idea that she might be capable of doing so is both exciting and unsettling. Moreover, she has the capacity to transport herself from one location to another – this was evident when she defeated the Demogorgon. However, she doesn’t appear to be able to initiate this action on her own, much like her other powers such as shattering electric lights, which she seems to perform unconsciously. Contemplate how formidable she could become if she learned to control and focus that power.
Apart from creating her own portals, she can also navigate through gates made by others, like when she returned to Hawkins using a gate constructed by Demogorgon. Over time, she has learned to close these opened portals, though this task takes a heavy toll on her physically. In essence, she possesses the power to forge connections with other dimensions; however, maintaining these links is a monumental effort for her.
Eleven has ESP
Instead of psychic projection, El possesses the extraordinary ability known as Extra-Sensory Perception (ESP). This gift allows her to perceive things she hasn’t directly experienced, without needing to delve into another person’s mind. For instance, she can identify individuals in photos taken in the Upside Down, even though she wasn’t present when those pictures were taken.
Throughout the series, her extraordinary perception abilities manifest in diverse ways. She delves into the recollections of multiple characters such as Terry (Aimee Mullins) and Billy Hargrove (Dacre Montgomery), using this insight to aid them. Additionally, she demonstrates psychometry, allowing her to determine who has interacted with, handled, or owned an item merely by touching it herself. Notably, she deciphers the token associated with Mike in their Dungeons and Dragons game just by looking at it.
Although she may not control electronics smoothly or consistently, she can still manipulate them to produce sounds such as noises, voices, and various other auditory effects using different speakers and sound systems. This skill significantly enhances her undercover activities in Season 3 and aids her in protecting innocents as well.
El has an unexplained connection to the afterlife
One intriguing and underdeveloped facet of El’s personality lies in her unique ability to connect with entities inhabiting the realm between worlds – those who seem deceased yet remain, such as Will (portrayed by Noah Schnapp,) and dwellers of places like the Upside Down. She was capable of communicating with Max while she was comatose and conversing with Henry Creel when he haunted the Upside Down. Furthermore, she could boost Will’s desperate calls for help as he sought an exit from the Upside Down. This power underscores El’s powerful, inherent bond with the Upside Down – a place that is intrinsic to her identity, yet she has striven to free herself from throughout her life.
El’s talent for navigating multiple realms is a captivating aspect of her existence, suggesting her expanding metaphysical powers that evolve alongside her own growth. Whether she’ll ultimately save or destroy Hawkins in the final season of “Stranger Things” remains to be seen. The last season will unfold in stages—a segment on Thanksgiving, another on Christmas Day, and the climactic finale on New Year’s Eve. Here’s hoping this mighty figure brings in 2026 with a dramatic flair.
