Why Mayim Bialik’s Blossom Won’t Get A Modern-Day Reboot

It turns out there was a good reason for Mayim Bialik’s recent sadness. She had been trying to revive her ’90s sitcom, “Blossom,” but Disney, which owns the rights to the show, doesn’t seem interested in bringing it back. Bialik detailed her efforts in a post on her Substack, Mayim Bialik Breakdown, explaining how she tried to get a new version of the show made.

According to Bialik, the creator of Blossom, Don Reo, had an idea for a story that would revisit Blossom and the other characters many years later. “Don wrote a draft all at once. He felt like the story just came to him naturally,” she shared. “It didn’t feel like writing, more like he was simply receiving it. He realized our characters were in the same places many of us are today- humorous, confused, searching, and conflicted. The script was truly beautiful.” Apparently, The Mouse House was enthusiastic about the concept, so what ultimately prevented it from happening?

Sadly, Bialik wasn’t able to participate in a revival because she was committed to her show, “Call Me Kat,” and her role hosting “Jeopardy!”. By the time her schedule opened up, Disney leaders had seemingly decided against the project. “We were told ‘no’ for no specific reason,” she explained (according to Entertainment Weekly). “We requested the rights to allow viewers to decide if they’d be interested in seeing these characters again after all these years. Disney informed us they were holding onto the rights in case they ever wanted to reboot ‘Blossom.'”

Bialik wants a Blossom reboot, but Disney doesn’t

Mayim Bialik is very enthusiastic about the possibility of reviving “Blossom.” Even if she wouldn’t reprise her role, she feels now is the perfect time to bring Blossom Russo and her memorable friends back to television. However, she envisions a reboot that’s more dramatic than the original. “We’re hoping to reboot it not as a sitcom,” she explained to Vanity Fair. “We want to bring back these interesting, deep characters – a child of divorce, a recovering drug addict, an alcoholic – to see them in a whole new way.”

She envisions the revival being similar to “Bel-Air,” the Peacock series inspired by the ’90s Will Smith show “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Unfortunately, Disney doesn’t seem keen on the concept either. Bialik believes this is a significant error in judgment. “While it’s possible people aren’t interested in a ‘Blossom’ reboot, I’m quite sure Disney made the wrong decision here,” she shared on her Substack, also expressing her disappointment that the modern “Blossom” reboot wasn’t approved. “We were incredibly enthusiastic about this idea and are deeply sorry we couldn’t make it a reality.” This is disheartening news, but she’s faced greater challenges – Mayim Bialik has had a tragic life.
