Since the release of “Happy Gilmore 2,” Adam Sandler fans have wondered if he’ll ever make another sequel to one of his classic comedies, like “Billy Madison” from 1995. That movie, about a fun-loving rich kid who has to repeat all grades of school to prove he earned his success, helped launch Sandler’s career and quickly became a beloved cult classic.
With “Happy Gilmore 2” becoming Netflix’s most popular film debut in the U.S., racking up 46.7 million views, talk of a sequel to “Billy Madison” is definitely growing. However, there’s been no official announcement about a follow-up film. So, what’s causing the delay, and what does Adam Sandler think about returning as Billy Madison? Here’s the latest information.
Why isn’t Billy Madison 2 happening yet?

The main reason we likely won’t see a sequel to “Billy Madison” is simply that Adam Sandler is incredibly busy. He’s experienced a major career comeback, succeeding in both funny and serious roles. For example, in 2025 he starred with George Clooney in “Jay Kelly,” a critically acclaimed film that received a ten-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival. After appearing in the sci-fi drama “Spaceman” in 2024, Sandler has also said he wants to focus on more dramatic projects.
According to Kevin James, a frequent co-star of Adam Sandler, a third “Grown Ups” movie is currently more probable than a sequel to “Billy Madison.” Sandler himself has acknowledged hearing discussions about another “Grown Ups” film, though he says they’re exploring several potential sequels. He told IndieWire they’re always brainstorming ways to reunite the cast, but haven’t settled on a specific plan yet. While Sandler is busy with other projects, a future “Billy Madison” movie isn’t entirely off the table.
What Adam Sandler has said about Billy Madison 2

I was so excited at the “Happy Gilmore 2” premiere when a reporter from Variety actually asked Adam Sandler about a potential “Billy Madison” sequel! Typical Sandler, he didn’t give a straight answer, but instead playfully said, “Let’s write it tonight!” He was totally joking, of course, but honestly, the fact that he didn’t immediately dismiss the idea is amazing news for those of us who still love Billy Madison. It gives me hope!
As a fan, I’ve been thinking about where a sequel could go, and I’d love to see Billy finally pursuing his dream of becoming a teacher! It was such a nice touch at the end of the first film when he handed the hotel over to Carl, who seemed like a really solid guy. It would be awesome to see Billy in the classroom, and also check in with Carl and see how he’s running Madison Hotels now that he’s in charge.
It’s no surprise that the actors from “Billy Madison” look different now, but many are still working in the industry. Sadly, a complete reunion isn’t possible because some of the film’s cast members, including Norm Macdonald (who played Frank, Billy’s friend) and Darren McGavin (Billy’s father), have passed away. They are among several actors from Adam Sandler films that people may not realize are no longer alive.
