As a lifelong science-fiction enthusiast, I must say that 2024 was a truly spectacular year for our beloved genre! I found myself completely captivated by the stunning visuals and gripping narratives of these films.
Of all genres, science fiction is undoubtedly my favorite. Be it tales of extraterrestrial life or explorations of advanced technology, films in this genre breathe life into realms we can scarcely fathom, making them seem tangible and authentic. However, the appeal goes beyond mere visual spectacle. Frequently, the finest science fiction movies serve as parables about humanity, employing the extraordinary to enlighten us on our own nature.
Science fiction films typically house some of the biggest franchises, but this year’s franchise fair was particularly strong. We witnessed what might be the finest Alien film in decades, as well as the best Transformers movie ever, released in 2024. Here’s a review of the top science fiction films of the year and why they were exceptional.
A Quiet Place: Day One
Although “A Quiet Place: Day One” was the third installment in the series, it felt fresh and different in numerous aspects. With a brand-new set of characters in a distinct setting, these new protagonists were navigating their way through uncharted territories since the characters from prior films had been dealing with the alien threat for quite some time. Consequently, our new heroes were learning and adapting as they encountered each situation.
In the film, Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn delivered powerful performances as their characters grappled with survival and acceptance of mortality, the undercurrent of tension persisting throughout.
Transformers One
One clear indicator of the unprecedented nature of this year in science fiction could be the observation that a “Transformers” film stood out as one of the top sci-fi movies. However, “Transformers: The First One” wasn’t just an excellent Transformers flick; it is, without a doubt, the finest “Transformers” movie ever produced.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but rave about this Transformers movie that’s unlike any other in the series. It manages to be hilarious and entertaining without veering into absurdity. It’s got a perfect blend of heart-pumping action and emotional depth, making it a rollercoaster ride of epic proportions. The heroic rise and dramatic downfall of its protagonist is reminiscent of Shakespearean tragedies, making for a captivating viewing experience. This movie does not disappoint; every aspect of its production is executed with remarkable skill.
The Wild Robot
If I earned a penny for each instance where a post-apocalyptic robot-themed animated film conveyed themes of love and optimism, I’d have just two pennies… not much, but it’s surprising that it occurred twice. The Wild Robot, while sharing some similarities with Pixar’s Wall-E, certainly carves out its unique narrative space.
This tale is elegantly narrated, striking both visually and emotionally. Similar to another animated film in this collection, it predominantly revolves around the theme of parenthood, delving into the blunders that new parents often commit. It’s a narrative about the potential for anyone to “overcome their pre-set limitations” if they are motivated enough to do so.
Ultraman: Rising
While Ultraman isn’t as widely recognized in the U.S. as in Japan, the film “Ultraman: Rising” manages to transcend cultural barriers by centering around themes that resonate universally among people worldwide.
In essence, “Ultraman Rising” may seem like it’s all about gigantic monster fights, but fundamentally, it is a narrative exploring themes of parenthood, making mistakes, and learning valuable lessons. Regardless if you are a parent yourself or just someone who had parents, the tale of “Ultraman: Rising” carries a message that resonates with everyone.
Alien: Romulus
After the success of two Alien films that are widely regarded as outstanding sci-fi productions, the franchise has faced challenges living up to such high expectations. Yet, with Alien: Romulus, director Fede Alvarez demonstrates that there remains a chilling element yet to be explored within the series.
Much like Dan Trachtenberg revitalized the Predator series, Alvarez demonstrates a keen grasp of what drives the Alien franchise. Regardless if you consider Romulus to be the third-best Alien film, it’s no longer the slight it once was due to its quality and contribution to the series.
Dune: Part Two
As a passionate cinephile, I found myself eagerly anticipating Dune: Part Two, knowing fully well that it had some big shoes to fill following Denis Villeneuve’s magnificent first installment. The original film garnered numerous Oscars, and judging by the reception of its sequel, there’s a strong possibility it could claim those honors once more.
The film concludes Paul Atreides’ tale with impressive flair, blending the anticipated sci-fi grandeur with a deep exploration of human nature – making it essentially a character study. In essence, Dune: Part Two employs the elements of science fiction to delve into the human condition in an extraordinary manner, much like all notable works of science fiction do.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Furiosa, while it might not match the greatness of Mad Max: Fury Road – a standout movie from the past decade – still comes pretty close, which is quite an achievement. Interestingly, Furiosa serves as an origin story that manages to deepen the character, potentially enhancing the impact of the original film even more.
In a fresh twist, Anya Taylor-Joy demonstrates her prowess as a genuine action star, while Chris Hemsworth delivers an engagingly dreadful antagonist. George Miller’s masterfully orchestrated action sequences grace our screens once more, casting the post-apocalyptic world in a surprisingly beautiful light.
Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes
To put it plainly, despite my strong affection for science fiction as a genre, I’ve never been particularly drawn to the Planet of the Apes series. As a child, the earlier versions seemed too cheesy for my taste, and even though I’ve heard that the latest trilogy is excellent, it never caught my interest. Surprisingly, this movie managed to hold my attention regardless of any prior context or connection to the franchise.
In “Kingdom,” it’s evident how impressive CGI characters can be when they are skillfully crafted, not only in terms of visual aesthetics but also in the depth of character portrayed by the actors. The world of Planet of the Apes seems remarkably alive and authentic, with few other sci-fi settings managing to achieve such a sense of realism.
2024 was a great year for us, and the science fiction genre appears to be shining even brighter ahead! The following year, 2025, promises exciting developments with new installments in both the Avatar and Jurassic Park series. Additionally, the legendary Guillermo del Toro will breathe life into the classic science fiction tale Frankenstein. Science fiction enthusiasts have been truly blessed lately, and it seems that this good fortune is set to continue.
