In approximately two decades, the world depicted in the movies “28 Days Later” and “28 Weeks Later,” filled with rage-zombies after a post-apocalyptic event, resurfaces. Sony Pictures has rekindled both fear and excitement among viewers by unveiling the first trailer for director Danny Boyle’s highly anticipated horror sequel titled “28 Years Later“. You can watch it below now.
Continuing from the success of “28 Days Later” in 2002 and its sequel “28 Weeks Later” in 2007, the much-anticipated film titled “28 Years Later” will finally unveil the world’s fate after the outbreak of the Rage Virus and the rise of the undead. Directed by Danny Boyle, with screenplay co-written by Alex Garland, “28 Years Later” features a talented ensemble cast that includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Erin Kellyman, and Edvin Ryding. Mark your calendars for its release on June 20, 2025, and read the official synopsis of “28 Years Later” provided below.
In collaboration once more, acclaimed director Danny Boyle, who has won an Academy Award®, and screenwriter Alex Garland, nominated for one, bring us “28 Years Later”, a gripping tale set within the universe established by “28 Days Later”. Over two decades have passed since the rage virus leaked from a secret laboratory, and now the world remains under strict isolation due to this deadly outbreak. On a small island linked to the mainland by a heavily guarded causeway, a group of survivors make their home. When one of them embarks on a journey into the heart of the forsaken mainland, he uncovers hidden truths, marvels, and terrors that have evolved not just the infected but also other survivors themselves.
A ’28 Years Later’ Follow-up Has Already Been Filmed
Originally unveiled in 2002, the film titled “28 Days Later” was helmed by Danny Boyle from a script penned by Alex Garland. It featured Cillian Murphy in one of his breakthrough performances. The narrative revolves around a bike messenger who emerges from a coma to find that London has been overtaken by a lethal virus, transforming its inhabitants into ruthless, mindless attackers. Praised for its innovative take on the zombie genre, the movie garnered critical acclaim. A sequel, “28 Weeks Later“, followed in 2007, focusing on a brother and sister as they strive to survive in this brutal new world.
Following decades, it’s been announced that “28 Years Later” will kickstart a new trilogy. Already filmed is the sequel, titled “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” with Nia DaCosta, director of “Candyman” and “The Marvels,” taking charge. The film is set to bring back many familiar faces (let’s cross our fingers for Cillian Murphy’s character from the original movie) for another round of chills. “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” is slated for a U.S. release by Sony Pictures Releasing on January 16, 2026.
