As a devoted fan of Gossip Girl since its inception, I must say that each character’s style evolution throughout the series has been as captivating as their intertwined love lives and scandalous secrets. From Blair’s iconic headbands to Chuck’s dapper suits, the fashion on this show was nothing short of extraordinary.
Back in the day, heels were all the rage, headbands were trendy, necklaces were big, and preppy dresses and skirts were popular fashion choices. This era is perfectly captured in the style of Gossip Girl, a stylish drama set on the Upper East Side of New York that aired on the CW from 2007 to 2012.
Although Blair Waldorf, portrayed by Leighton Meester, was undeniably the most stylish character amongst the group on “Gossip Girl”, throughout its six-season run, many of the fashion trends showcased were either far ahead of their time or timeless classics. It was heartbreaking when the series concluded and we had to part ways with those iconic outfits. Now, let’s delve into some standout looks that continue to impress us.
Blair Waldorf’s Black Opening Episode Dress (Season 1, Episode 1)
Initially, Gossip Girl presents Blair at a social gathering alongside her mother. It is rumored she’s donning an Eleanor design, but in reality, she sports a fashion-forward Ann Sui outfit that was visionary for its era. Notably, black attire has been and will continue to be timelessly stylish – something you’ve always appreciated.
Serena’s Very Best Gold Dress (Season 5, Episode 9)
As a gamer, I’d say: In the world of Gossip Girl, Serena van der Woodsen sure does love her gold and yellow ensembles, but nothing beats the stunning look she served in Season 5, Episode 9! She donned a vintage-style Diane Von Furstenberg dress, resplendent in gold. To top it all off, her teased hair added an extra touch of elegance to her already impressive outfit.
Chuck Bass’ Bejeweled Formal Look (Season 2, Episode 12)
Although the women from “Gossip Girl” often steal the spotlight, it would be unfair not to mention Chuck Bass at least a few times in our list. Among all the male characters, Bass stands out for his unique and stylish sense of fashion that never veers into tackiness. This jacket from Season 2 serves as the most impressive demonstration of how striking his formal attire truly was.
Vanessa’s Gorgeous Twist Front Dress (Season 3, Episode 5)
During the six-season span of “Gossip Girl,” there were no dearth of stunning ball gowns, yet among them all, the ballgown worn by Jessica Szohr in Season 3, during Blair’s Old Hollywood fantasy sequence, stood out as my absolute favorite. Interestingly, Vanessa is not one of my preferred characters when it comes to fashion on this series, but the Reem Acra dress she wore still exudes a fiery charm and could easily flatter various body types.
Serena Van Der Woodsen’s Flared Pink Pants (Season 4, Episode 1)
A tailored pant is a girl’s best friend, and this lovely look from Serena van der Woodsen combines my two favorite things: comfort and Barbiecore fashion. Pants like these have made a resurgence, but they’ll never not be a classic look.
Blair Waldorf’s First Wedding Dress (Season 5, Episode 13)
Among all the noteworthy costumes from the series, Blair’s white wedding gown undeniably leaves the greatest impression. The lace detailing and bow accent add an extra touch of elegance, yet it’s clear that the true celebration happens at the back. Unfortunately, this storyline didn’t have a happy ending, but the dress remains breathtakingly stunning.
Serena Van Der Woodsen’s Caged Dress (Season 4, Episode 1)
In the beginning of Season 4, an excellent montage featuring various stylish outfits worn by Blair and Serena during their time in France was presented. Among those outfits, I particularly admire a cage corset dress from George Chakra couture embellished with Swarovski crystals. I believe that Swarovski crystals can elevate any outfit to perfection.
Blair’s Floral Dress (Season 4, Episode 1)
Curious about appropriate attire for a museum visit? Consider donning a stylish, timeless floral chiffon dress, similar to the one Blair Waldorf is known for wearing. It’s both flowing and modern, making it perfect for such occasions. To complete the look, add an elegant pearl choker reminiscent of the one she wore – a true work of art in its own right.
Jenny Humphrey’s Goth Girl Meets Prep (Season 2, Episode 14)
A significant part of enjoying the initial episodes of Gossip Girl lies in observing the characters elevate their school uniform style. Here, Jenny pairs a crossover tie with a black coat, but it’s the pink tulle beneath her plaid skirt and the classic boots that truly embody elegance. The upper half is classic school attire, while the lower half exudes a punk-rock vibe.
Redemption For Vanessa’s Snowflake Ball Dress (Season 2, Episode 12)
In Season 2’s Snowflake Ball, I adore the intricate rope detailing on Vanessa’s dress. Though it faced criticism when a light exposed its thinner material than anticipated, Vanessa’s avant-garde style has proven to be ahead of its time and remains fashionable even today. The dress’s timeless silhouette makes it suitable for any era or location.
Chuck Bass In His Gordon Gekko Era (Season 3, Episode 1)
During the television series “Gossip Girl”, Chuck Bass wasn’t afraid of bold style choices. However, it was in Season 3 that his fashion truly progressed, with his Gordon Gekko-inspired suspenders phase. Interestingly, the ’80s influences might have stemmed from Chuck trying to project an image similar to his father when he assumed control of his company. Nevertheless, this style is undeniably one he carries off confidently.
Blair’s Famous Photoshoot Dress (Season 1, Episode 4)
In many instances throughout their relationship, there is palpable tension between Serena and Blair. However, during Season 1, things are noticeably uncomfortable. The underpinnings of their friendship become more apparent in Episode 4, as Serena proposes a photoshoot for her mother Eleanor’s fashion brand to Blair, followed by assisting Blair in enjoying herself while wearing a stunning black and yellow floral dress to ensure the pictures turn out fabulous.
Nate Archibald Untucked, Untied And A Little Askew (All Seasons)
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but notice Nate Archibald’s unique sense of style. While his attire is of high quality, it’s not just about the clothing itself – it’s how he wears it. He often sports a casual, slightly off-kilter look, with an undone tie, shirt untucked, and a few top buttons left unfastened. There’s something endearing about this style, and I particularly appreciate the charming touch of the loose tie paired with a school uniform.
Lily’s Strong-Shouldered Black Dress (Season 4, Episode 18)
In a distinctive style from designer Roland Mouret, this stunning black outfit worn by Serena’s mother on the series stood out among many black dresses she donned throughout the show. Each one exuded elegance, but the impeccable tailoring of this specific piece makes it timelessly striking, regardless of what era we find ourselves in.
Serena’s Sparkly Mini Skirt And Sweater Combo (Season 5, Episode 12)
Serena excels at something not everyone manages: combining various patterns and prints in her outfits. Some of her looks are quite bold, yet others shine uniquely, such as the sequined mini skirt and sweater she wore together with a neutral black coat and brown bag during Season 5. While I might opt for flats instead, I’d still rock this style!
Blair’s Sparkly Dress And Headband (Season 6, Episode 5)
In Gossip Girl, there’s no shortage of stunning ballgowns, but this shimmering floor-length ensemble takes it to another level with its daring accessories. That headband! Those eye-catching earrings! This was a time for excess, and Blair carries it off effortlessly.
Lily Dives Into Prints! (Season 5, Episode 4)
Lily usually prefers satin materials and black hues, but occasionally she delights in vibrant prints and bold colors, such as this instance. The white earrings adorned with a splash of yellow make an ideal finishing accent.
Blair’s Colored Tights (Many Eps, But This One’s Season 1, Episode 15)
As a fashion enthusiast, I wouldn’t have thought the bold combination of fiery red tights with a sunny yellow Ralph Lauren coat would work, but it was Blair Waldorf who proved me wrong! She paired this vibrant combo with a sweet, preppy blouse and a neutral bag, creating a look that truly made her shine. While colored tights may go in and out of style, I’ve learned to always keep them in my wardrobe staples, as they have the power to elevate any outfit!
Jenny Embraces The Dark Side (Season 3, Episode 4)
In Season 3, Jenny often dons black outfits as she finds her stride at Constance Billiard, but the combination of that bubble skirt and black jacket stands out among my favorites. Adding her trademark fishnet stockings would have made it simply flawless.
Georgina Rocks A Purple Dress (Season 2, Episode 23)
In the gaming world, I’m known for my love of the dark side, decked out in black most of the time. But surprise! In Season 2, you might have noticed a change – I donned a captivating purple textured gown adorned with a chic belt at my waist. The metallic hardware added an edge, making it a unique piece that truly stood out.
Serena’s Grey Coat And Cashmere Gloves (Season 3, Episode 13)
Initially, many of Serena’s coats were made of leather, but come Season 3, she started experimenting with her style. One of the unusual instances where we observe Serena dressed in softer, pastel tones is during this season, and it suits her exceptionally well.
Dan And Serena At Blair’s Wedding (Season 5, Episode 13)
This item serves a dual purpose, looking especially fitting for Serena, while Dan is elegantly dressed in a three-piece suit. Additionally, Serena has an elegant headwear to match. Remarkably, both outfits are sophisticated enough that they could gracefully appear at a modern wedding.
Jenny’s Goth Formalwear (Season 3, Episode 9)
I know people love early seasons, but I’m kind of starting to feel like Season 3 may have been peak Gossip Girl fashion, as this formalwear look from Jenny with the puffed out skirt and red lip is so pretty and edgy at the same time. It helps she has Nate Archibald as an accessory too.
Blair’s Finale Wedding Dress (Season 6, Episode 10)
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve always had a soft spot for Blair’s icy queen attire in the final episode of Gossip Girl, not the golden one Serena wore that many fans seemed to adore. There’s just something about it that reminds me of Downton Abbey, and let’s face it, Leighton Meester’s character ending on this fashionable note has always left a lasting impression on me.
Juliet Goes Gossamer (Season 4, Episode 8)
In the TV show “Gossip Girl,” many of the standout styles are not worn by secondary characters, but Juliet’s outfit in one scene surpasses both Blair and Serena’s looks in the same episode. While Blair dons a cool backless halter dress that’s ordinary, and Serena wears a beaded number that seems to make her appear older, Katie Cassidy’s delicate gown with an intriguing asymmetrical hemline is both timeless and memorable.
Serena’s Yale Outfit (Season 2, Episode 6)
Among all the characters on Gossip Girl, it’s undeniably Serena who pulls off casual style effortlessly, even surpassing Vanessa’s frequent casual attire. This might be because she exudes an upscale aura without appearing to strive for it. I’ve never come across a blazer as distinctive as the one she donned at the Yale campus in Season 2. Her choice to pair this look with jeans, a stylish bag, and riding boots was spot-on – I find myself yearning for that exact ensemble now.
Blair’s Green Dress Season 5, Episode 1
I’ve always kind of felt Blair’s green dress in the opening episode of Season 5 is a showstopper that doesn’t get enough time to shine. I don’t see people talk about it much, probably because Serena’s California storyline takes over in the episode, but I still think it’s a showstopper.
Ivy’s Flapper Dress (Season 5, Episode 7)
As a devoted admirer, I must confess that Ivy often dons flowing ensembles that, over time, seem reminiscent of eras past. Yet, on the eve of the masked affair, she astoundingly transforms into a radiant vision in a sequined flapper dress, adorned with delicate floral motifs along its lower hem. The design may not suit all, but let me tell you, it’s an absolute spectacle to behold.
Chuck’s Animal Print Collar (Season 5, Episode 12)
In the fifth season, I strutted through the bustling streets of New York City, donning an initially understated gray suit paired with a semi-surprising brown vest. However, if one took a closer look at the collar of my coat, they’d witness Chuck Bass at his most stylish: a bold, striking animal print.
Diana’s Yellow Dress (Season 5, Episode 4)
Previously, I might have asserted that Serena was the undisputed ruler in yellow dresses. However, Liz Hurley’s brief stint on “Gossip Girl” showcases numerous fitted sheath outfits that are still fashionably relevant today. This one certainly stands the test of time.
Serena’s Marilyn Monroe Nod (Season 5. Episode 13)
Many individuals have recognized Marilyn Monroe’s iconic dress from “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” even Margot Robbie emulating Monroe as Harley Quinn. However, Blake Lively in the style evokes a sense of genuine stage presence, in a positive manner. It’s classic, pink, and most notably embellished with an abundance of jewels.
Jenny’s Marchesa Moment (Season 3, Episode 20)
Throughout the series, Little Jenny Humphrey often sported a punk rock or edgy style, yet she managed to make a high-end Marchesa gown look trendy before her departure from Hollywood as a child star. During the show’s airing, Marchesa was quite popular, though it may not be as sought-after now. Regardless, I wouldn’t mind having one in my closet.
