As a huge fan of Cobra Kai, I’m thrilled to hear that the showrunners are thinking about potential spin-offs after the final season in 2025. The creative minds behind this beloved series never stop talking about it and have a multitude of ideas where it can go next. The connection between Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) is one of the show’s most compelling aspects, and it’s fascinating to learn that their reunion was initiated by the death of Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita). The friendship that blossomed between them after decades apart is a testament to the enduring impact of this franchise on its fans. I can’t wait to see what stories unfold in the final season and beyond!
“Josh Heald, one of the co-showrunners of ‘Cobra Kai,’ shares his thoughts on potential future spin-offs for the hugely successful Netflix series. Alongside Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, this creative team has breathed new life into ‘The Karate Kid’s’ legacy on television, resulting in five seasons filled with compelling and binge-worthy storytelling. With the sixth and final season set to premiere in 2025, Heald discusses the prospects of spin-offs following the conclusion of ‘Cobra Kai’ Season Six.”
“There’s a lot that we’re thinking about.
There’s not a lot we can talk about yet, but I can say, you know us, we love this franchise.
We never stop talking’ about this franchise.
We talk about contemporary spin-offs, we talk about spin-offs that take place 80 or 90 years ago,
and we continue to look to the future and the fandom and our partners at Sony and Netflix to help us determine when we can begin to talk about some of that stuff.”
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been captivated by the unique allure of “Cobra Kai.” The show has a special power that draws you in with its redemptive storyline. I used to see Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) as a one-time bully tormenting Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) in “The Karate Kid” films. But on Netflix, his character has undergone an incredible transformation into a sympathetic and heroic figure. And get this – even the antagonists from those movies, like Chozen Toguchi (Yuji Okumoto) and Mike Barnes (Sean Kanan), have made amends with Daniel.
Pat Morita’s Death First Reunited Karate Kid Rivals
In a recent conversation with Josh Heald, the mastermind behind “Cobra Kai,” he shared that he and his team are brimming with countless ideas for the continuation and expansion of this popular series. The enduring appeal and passion for the original “Karate Kid” films, featuring characters such as Daniel LaRusso (Macchio), Mr. Miyagi (Morita), and Johnny Lawrence (Zabka), have been instrumental in making the Netflix show a hit.
Before Daniel and Johnny rekindled their rivalry on “Cobra Kai” and eventually formed an unlikely friendship, Macchio and Zabka had gone their separate ways for nearly two decades. It was the passing of Morita in 2005 that served as the catalyst for their reunion, more than twenty years after filming the original movie. In a recent conversation with PEOPLE, Macchio shared:
For over fifteen to twenty years prior to Pat Morita’s demise, I hadn’t had any contact with Billy (Zabka). At the memorial service in Las Vegas, I unexpectedly felt a strong emotional connection upon seeing him. It was reassuring to see him there and marked the beginning of our renewed friendship as adults, which proved to be significant.
Zabka, who portrays the most beloved of Cobra Kai’s best characters, added:
Pat held significant importance in our lives as individuals, and we were deeply connected friends. When he tragically passed away, it was a heart-wrenching experience. Ron Thomas (Bobby from The Karate Kid, The Karate Kid Part II, Cobra Kai) and I reacted instantly, picking up the phone and arranging to fly to Las Vegas. Reflecting back, it’s fascinating how Miyagi had unknowingly acted as a catalyst for our friendship.
In that instant, our individual universes intersected, leading us back to the origin of our mutual connection. That encounter essentially sparked the development and blossoming of our friendship.
