The Older Brother On The Wonder Years Is A Grandpa, And Danica McKellar Feels The Same Way As The Rest Of Us

As a long-time fan of “The Wonder Years,” I can’t help but feel a mix of nostalgia and amazement as I reflect on the news that Jason Hervey, who played Kevin Arnold’s older brother Wayne, is now a proud grandfather. When I first watched the show back in the ’90s, Hervey’s portrayal of the mischievous and annoying older brother was a source of frustration for me, to say the least. But seeing him now as a grandfather brings a new perspective.

The Wonder Years is truly one of the best sitcoms of all time, as it depicted the everyday challenges of growing up in the late 1960s. Since the final episode of the coming-of-age series aired back in 1993, the young stars that acted on the show have all grown up . So grown up that Jason Hervey, who played Kevin Arnold’s older brother Wayne on the dramedy, is now a grandfather. And his former co-star, Danica McKellar, feels just like we do.

I’m truly amazed by the complexities of human nature. Jason Hervey, who was once known for playing the antagonistic role of Wayne Arnold in “The Wonder Years,” is now a proud grandfather at the age of 52. I can still recall the vivid memories of him tormenting Fred Savage’s character, Kevin, with the nickname “Butthead.” It’s hard to believe that this same person has moved on from his past and is now enjoying the joys of being a grandfather.

At the recent Fanboy Expo in Tennessee, the cast of “The Wonder Years” had an extraordinary reunion. Previously, they reunited for the DVD release and attended a Rangers hockey game a decade ago. However, this latest gathering stood out. During this event, the cast came face-to-face with Jason Hervey’s grandson, Shia. I find it hard to grasp that the actor who portrayed Kevin’s older brother Winnie, known for his mischief in the ’80s/’90s sitcom, has now become a grandfather! It’s challenging for me to accept this new reality and adjust my mental image of him.

Little Shia was so lucky to get to meet the former cast members of his grandfather’s old show, including his “TV great-grandfather,” Dan Lauria, who played Wayne’s father on The Wonder Years. But the most memorable pic from the Instagram carousel is the shot of Danica McKellar holding this little bundle of joy. In her caption, the Hallmark/GAC Family actress expressed her thoughts, which align with mine and probably yours as well:

Feeling nostalgic? I can’t believe it, but my “Wonder Years” costar Jason Harvey (Wayne Arnold) is now a grandfather! And let me tell you, his grandson Shia is absolutely adorable. I know I shouldn’t be surprised by the passage of time, but it’s hard to believe that Wayne has a grandchild of his own. What a journey life takes us on!

Certainly, she managed to calm Shia down. In her Instagram post, Danica McKellar revealed that Shia had been crying when she held him. However, as a seasoned parent, she knew just what to do. She shared a video of herself using a technique she’d employed on her own son when he was only four weeks old – the “U-bend” method. By gently swaying Shia from side to side and patting his back while humming a soothing rhythm, she effectively calmed him down. Jason Hervey expressed his gratitude for Danica’s actions in a comment on her post, acknowledging her expertise in comforting infants at such moments.

As a gamer, I can share two unique experiences that make my journey extraordinary. Firstly, my loving mother-daughter duo, Shaina Torres, trusted me enough to let me hold their precious baby Shia. Believe me, not everyone is fortunate enough to have this opportunity (I chuckle at the thought). Secondly, I had the privilege of putting him down for a nap, infusing him with our family’s love and care. He sensed the warmth and familiarity, making us an inseparable part of his early memories.

It’s hard to believe that the older brother from “The Wonder Years,” Jason Hervey, is now a grandfather. Yet, just like many others, I’m delighted for him. I’m also thrilled that Hervey and his castmates remain close-knit friends. As Hervey put it to McKellar, “You are family,” and it warms my heart to know that “little Shia” has so many loving people around him.
