As you draw near to the Elden Ring’s Shadow Keep legacy site, known as Shadow of the Erdtree, an ominous crackling noise rings out. The game then notifies you with the message: “A Great Rune has been shattered somewhere“.
In simpler terms, the stories and side missions in Souls games can be confusing and not easily understood at first glance.
What does “Somewhere a Great Rune has broken” mean?

As a gamer, I can tell you that there’s a hidden dungeon waiting to be explored at the depths of the Cerulean Coast peninsula, which is currently inaccessible. You’ll only be able to enter it once you receive a specific message. Before then, trying to access it will result in encountering an unpassable yellow door.
As a seasoned adventurer who has faced countless challenges and foes in my journeys, I can tell you that this particular area is not mandatory, but it offers an intriguing opportunity for those daring enough to take it on. Here, you’ll encounter the Putrescent Knight boss, a formidable enemy that will put your skills to the test. But that’s not all – you’ll also meet St. Trina, a significant Non-Player Character (NPC) in the Thiollier questline. Her presence adds an extra layer of importance and intrigue to this encounter. So, if you’re up for a challenge and want to advance in the Thiollier quest, then venturing into this area could be your next move.
As a gamer, I can choose to press on with the primary storyline without giving this message a second thought. However, if I want to add some excitement and challenges to my gameplay experience, I should consider engaging in these optional fights and collecting the new equipment mentioned. These additional elements can enhance my gaming journey and provide me with rewards that are definitely worth exploring.
