As a dedicated fan, I have been following Mark Harmon‘s extraordinary career for decades, and his portrayal of Leroy Jethro Gibbs in NCIS is nothing short of iconic. The recent news about his involvement in the upcoming prequel series, NCIS: Origins, has left me both excited and intrigued.
Mark Harmon, who plays Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS, has shared some insights regarding his future role in the hit show. Harmon’s character will have a continued presence through a new spin-off called NCIS: Origins. Austin Stowell will portray Gibbs in this prequel series, but Harmon will provide narration. However, it remains unclear if Harmon will make any on-screen appearances in the main NCIS series once more.
As a dedicated fan and avid gamer of this long-running show, I can tell you that the actor we all adore hasn’t made up his mind yet about rejoining the series in the future. Although Harmon continues to hold an executive producer role, it’s unclear if he’ll make a comeback onscreen. It’s been two whole years since we last saw him in action, which was early in Season 19 when Gibbs informed McGee that he wouldn’t be returning to D.C., opting instead to stay in the Alaskan town following a case.
“I have been asked that a lot… I’ve always let the writers do what they want to do.”
Harmon left open the possibility of returning for a series finale appearance on NCIS, expressing that it can be difficult to know when a character’s story has truly come to an end. Previously, NCIS showrunner Steven D. Binder mentioned Gibbs’ absence from the franchise’s 1,000th episode in April 2024, sharing with TVLine that Harmon was welcome to reprise his role as Gibbs. Yet, should he do so, they aim for a substantial appearance rather than a brief cameo.
Certainly, we welcome him back with open arms, not just for a brief moment. It should be a significant occasion when he returns to us.
Mark Harmon Still Involved in the NCIS Universe, Potentially Opening the Door for an On-Screen Return
Mark Harmon continues his role as an executive producer of the original “NCIS” show and will additionally produce the new prequel series, “NCIS: Origins,” which takes place in the 1990s. By producing and narrating the upcoming series, Harmon’s presence in the TV world remains consistent. Although he hasn’t appeared on-screen for some significant episodes yet, there’s no definitive closure on Leroy Gibbs making a comeback in future installments. Everyone seems to be adopting a “never say never” attitude.
Origins.” During an interview with USA Today at the TCA press tour, Harmon expressed his opinion that Monreal recognized Austin’s potential as the new leading man right away. Here’s the quote from Harmon:
Based on my personal observation and understanding of human behavior, I believe there are moments when people, like Gina in this scenario, might try to hide their true feelings from others for various reasons. They might feel embarrassed or shy about expressing their admiration openly, or they may simply want to maintain a certain image or persona. However, deep down, these feelings can be quite strong and sometimes even overpower them, causing an involuntary reaction.
The new NCIS spin-off, titled NCIS: Origins, is set to make its debut on CBS this coming October 14, 2024, at 9 PM Eastern Time. Following its broadcast, the episodes will be added to Paramount+ for streaming. It’s worth mentioning that fans can currently stream full episodes of the original NCIS series on multiple platforms.
