Imax and muvi Cinemas, the major Saudi Arabia exhibitor, have signed a four-theater deal.
Under the terms of the deal, muvi Cinemas is set to launch two Imax theaters equipped with laser technology in Riyadh and Jeddah’s Mall of Arabia, respectively, by 2025. An additional Imax theater outfitted with a laser system will also debut in Dhahran during this timeframe.
Imax currently operates 10 cinema screens in Saudi Arabia, while plans include expanding to an additional 22 screens through partnerships with notable Middle Eastern cinema chains, including Vox Cinemas and AMC Cinemas.
In a statement, Imax CEO Rich Gelfond expressed his excitement about the dedicated moviegoers in this country who have shown great enthusiasm for various Imax films, from “Oppenheimer” to “Bad Boys,” as well as international productions. By collaborating with a major, nationwide exhibitor like muvi, we’re enhancing our capacity to cater to this robust demand.
Muvi Cinemas, established in 2019 and based in Riyadh, is a homegrown business managed by muvi Cinemas Company. We’re thrilled to collaborate with Imax, the global leader in providing the most captivating cinematic experiences, to introduce Imax with Laser to significant cities in Saudi Arabia. This includes the inaugural Imax location in Dhahran, as announced by Adon Quinn, muvi Cinemas’ CEO.
In addition to blockbuster movies from Hollywood, Imax has featured films produced in local languages like Hindi and Japanese in cinemas across Saudi Arabia. The company aims to open at least 50 new locations in the country as part of their local growth strategy.
