There's A World Where Steven Spielberg Directed The Harry Potter Movies, But It Sounds Like They Would Have Been Really Different

As a long-time gamer and avid movie buff, I’ve always been captivated by the what-ifs of Hollywood history. The stories of iconic films and franchises that stood at a crossroads and took different paths are some of my favorites. With the upcoming limited series adaptation of JK Rowling’s wizarding world, I can’t help but reflect on how different things could have been if Steven Spielberg had helmed one of the early Harry Potter movies instead of Chris Columbus.

Intriguing are Hollywood tales filled with pivotal moments when influential films or franchises face critical junctures. A single choice made can alter the trajectory of a widely beloved series, shaping the industry for potentially long periods. As we eagerly anticipate Hollywood’s next attempt to bring J.K. Rowling’s wizarding world to life through a limited series, we are transported back in time when Steven Spielberg came close to directing one of the initial Harry Potter movies. Had this renowned director spearheaded the series instead, the outcome would have been dramatically distinct.

During the early stages of bringing the Harry Potter series to life, Warner Bros. explored various possibilities. Reports have surfaced throughout the years suggesting that Steven Spielberg was considering the project, and he has shared his reasons for ultimately declining. Now, Haley Joel Osment, who worked on the film Spielberg chose instead of Harry Potter, is sharing insights into the situation. This information is significant due to Osment’s involvement in the movie Spielberg opted to produce instead of Harry Potter.

In the year 2001, renowned filmmaker Steven Spielberg unveiled the science fiction classic “A.I.: Artificial Intelligence,” which represented Spielberg’s endeavor to bring an idea initially proposed by Stanley Kubrick to life on the big screen. During a recent interview on The Spiel podcast, Osment shared his recollections about Spielberg, Harry Potter, and his role in “A.I.” He spoke candidly to the hosts about these experiences.

Reflecting on my past experiences, I recall a fascinating encounter I had back in late 1999. It was around November or December when I met with this legendary filmmaker, whom I had the immense privilege of meeting alongside my father. At the time, the awards season hype hadn’t started yet, and the notion of Harry Potter becoming a cinematic phenomenon was still just a twinkle in J.K. Rowling’s eye.

A cartoon version of the Harry Potter series would have been an intriguing alternative. This approach could have alleviated the worry of filmmakers at the time about actors growing older while the movies were still being produced. The young cast was initially brought on board, and it’s remarkable that they managed to maintain their character consistency throughout the filming process. By animating the iconic Harry Potter characters from the start, this potential issue could have been bypassed. The producers of “Stranger Things” can relate as they deal with their adult cast advancing in age for the upcoming season 5.

As a gamer, I can’t help but imagine what it would be like if Steven Spielberg had directed the animated Harry Potter films instead of the live-action ones we got. But alas, fate had other plans. The reins were handed over to Spielberg’s protege, Chris Columbus, who helmed the first two movies and established the series’ tone. Later on, Alfonso Cuarón took things up a notch with the brilliantly crafted “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.”
