As a hardcore gamer and longtime fan of The Crow, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment upon hearing Bill Skarsgård’s latest revelation about his regrets regarding his portrayal of Eric Draven in the upcoming reimagining of this iconic antihero. I’ve grown up with images of Eric Draven as a brooding, tortured soul, a musician with a lean and gaunt frame, not some chiseled Adonis.
In an upcoming film this year, “John Wick: Chapter 4” actor Bill Skarsgård will star as Eric Draven in a new version of “The Crow.” Skarsgård has expressed his deepest regret over his portrayal of the antihero, feeling that he made him too muscular. The audience’s reaction to footage and images from the movie has been predominantly negative online, and it appears that Skarsgård shares this sentiment. He recently shared in Empire Magazine that a more authentic portrayal would have been “really skinny” instead.
It felt unusual for me to be in top form while Eric was supposed to be underweight. I preferred him to be quite unfit. Exercising wasn’t something Eric was known for, and in an ideal scenario, he would have been less fit during the first part of the movie.
With an impressive physique adorned by sports tattoos, resembling any Marvel superhero, Skarsgård shared that he had finished filming for the dystopian action movie “Boy Kills World.” Consequently, his character Eric Draven, who is meant to be a musician with no gym time or inclination, appeared quite muscular. Although unable to change his body shape in a brief period, Skarsgård expressed regret over it. However, would a thinner build for the actor have swayed the numerous fans who were already skeptical about the film’s reimagining?
Bill Skarsgård Has Some Reservations About the Ending of The Crow
It’s worth noting that Skarsgård has voiced concerns over certain aspects of the new take on The Crow before. In a recent interview with Esquire, the actor expressed regret about the film’s finale and shared his preference for an alternative ending.
“I personally preferred something more definitive.”
In the 1989 comic “The Crow,” created by James O’Barr, the narrative centers around Eric, a young man, and his lover Shelly. Their world is shattered when they are brutally attacked by a band of ruffians, leaving Shelly dead and Eric critically injured. Unable to let go of his grief, Eric passes away in the hospital. However, an enigmatic crow brings him back to life with a mission: to take vengeance on Shelly’s killers. As a gamer, I can tell you that my in-game character Eric and his beloved Shelly (played by Skarsgård and FKA twigs) were cruelly taken from this world. The shadows of her past demons had found them, and their lives were cut short. But if only I could have the power to turn back time, I would gladly give my own life to save hers. With newfound determination, I embark on a quest for vengeance. I delve deep into both the realms of the living and the dead, seeking out those who wronged us and setting things right in the most merciless way possible.
Under the guidance of Rupert Sanders’ direction, and written by Zach Baylin and Will Schneider, “The Crow” features Bill Skarsgård portraying Eric Draven, also known as The Crow, and FKA Twigs bringing Shelly Webster to life. Additionally, Isabella Wei stars as Zadie, with appearances from Danny Huston, Laura Birn, Sami Bouajila, and Jordan Bolger.
