As a dedicated gamer and avid follower of Hollywood news, I’m thrilled to hear that Madonna‘s biopic is back in development after a long hiatus. This isn’t just any ordinary project, it’s about the Queen of Pop herself! I remember when rumors first surfaced of a potential film chronicling her life and career, I was beyond excited.
I’m thrilled to hear that Madonna’s biopic is being revived once again! It’s been almost a year and a half since we learned that the project was put on hold.
The Universal Pictures project, slated to depict the long-term musical journey of the singer, was initially in development. However, by January 2023, the arrangements had collapsed.
Madonna recently uploaded an Instagram post featuring a series of images of herself engrossed in typing at an old typewriter, surrounded by piles of papers. In one picture, the words “Who’s That Girl” can be seen as a possible title on what seems like a script’s opening page – a reference to her 1987 hit song and movie with the same name.
An alternate look at the script reveals the notations “rewrites by Madonna and ECW.” This appears to signify Erin Cressida Wilson, who joined the project as a writer after Diablo Cody had to leave it. Initially, Amy Pascal was slated to produce the film.
“I Need A-lot of Bandz to make this………..OKAY,” she captioned the post. “(Story of my life.)”

Based on my experience as a long-time film industry insider, I’ve heard countless tales of ambitious movie projects that ultimately failed to come to fruition. The one I’m thinking of now, as shared by an insider with The Hollywood Reporter, is particularly noteworthy.
“Four decades of achievement are quite a feat to condense into a single film,” the insider commented previously.
Madonna was set to direct the biopic. Julia Garner was the frontrunner to play the legendary artist, after a long audition process that saw many stars — including Florence Pugh, Odessa Young and Alexa Demie — vying for the lead role. The hopefuls participated in intense and sometimes 11-hour choreography sessions with Madonna’s choreographer and the artist herself.
At this time, it is unknown if Universal is still attached to the project.
THR reached out to Universal Pictures and reps for Madonna.
