Longlegs Studio Picks Up Found-Footage Horror Film From Popular YouTube Creator

As a passionate gamer and film enthusiast with a soft spot for indie studios, I’ve been thrilled to witness Neon’s recent string of successes in the film industry. Their latest acquisition, the horror documentary/found-footage film “Shelby Oaks,” from YouTube personality Chris Stuckmann, has me even more excited than ever!

After an extraordinarily successful weekend at the box office for their newest release, “Longlegs,” Neon is popping the corks on champagne bottles in celebration. This success marks Neon as the go-to studio for emerging talent and daring projects, with each new acquisition serving to strengthen this reputation. Following the triumph of “Longlegs,” Neon has made strategic moves to acquire a horror film from YouTube sensation and filmmaker, Chris Stuckmann.

According to Deadline, Neon has obtained the global rights for the documentary-style horror film “Shelby Oaks,” which was penned and helmed by Stuckmann. This business arrangement was facilitated by Neon’s Vice President of Acquisitions & Production, Jason Wald, while Paper Street Pictures’ CEO, Aaron B. Koontz, represented Stuckmann during the negotiations. The film is scheduled to make its debut at the Fantasia Festival this coming weekend.

In the beginning of his YouTube journey, Stuckmann stood out as a highly productive film critic with an impressive following. He currently boasts 2.04 million subscribers and a total view count of over 760 million on the platform. In 2022, Stuckmann initiated a Kickstarter campaign to finance his first film, titled “Shelby Oaks“. The campaign surpassed its goal of $1.39 million within a month, making it the most successful horror movie fundraising project on Kickstarter to date. The production gained further recognition when renowned horror director Mike Flanagan joined as an executive producer.

Shelby Oaks Is a Supernatural Horror Film Told in Found-Footage Style

I’ve come across a chilling horror game called “Shelby Oaks.” In this immersive experience, the creators blend supernatural terror with documentary and found-footage styles. The narrative follows my character, Mia, played by Camille Sullivan, as she becomes frantic in her quest to find her missing sister Riley, portrayed by Sarah Durn. Riley’s disappearance is captured on the last recording of a paranormal investigation team called the Paranormal Paranoids. As I delve deeper into this search, I may uncover the unsettling truth that the demon my sister once spoke of during our childhood wasn’t just an imaginary friend after all. The cast includes talented actors like Brendan Sexton III, Michael Beach, Robin Bartlett, Keith David, Charlie Talbert, and Emily Bennett.

Recently, Neon has experienced significant success. In 2024, they surpassed their previous opening weekend record multiple times. The horror film “Immaculate,” starring Sydney Sweeney, set a new record when it opened to $5.3 million in March. This film has since earned over $27 million worldwide on a budget of $9 million. Over the weekend, Neon’s film “Longlegs” broke this record again with an opening weekend revenue of $22.6 million. Made for under $10 million, “Longlegs” also holds the title for the biggest opening weekend for an original horror film in 2024.

Next in line for Neon’s horror lineup is the film “Cuckoo,” featuring Hunter Schafer. The movie will be released on August 9. Feel free to watch the trailer here.
