As a dedicated TV enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, I find the nearly complete shift in drama series nominees for this year’s Emmy Awards truly fascinating. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen such a drastic change in the lineup, and it’s not just a simple changing of the guard – it’s more about the way TV is produced now.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m always excited to see what new and exciting series will be recognized at the Emmy Awards each year. And while it’s intriguing that the best drama series nominees for the 2024 Emmys are almost all different from those of the previous awards, this isn’t necessarily a sign of an entirely new wave taking over. Instead, I believe it’s a reflection of how TV production has evolved in recent times. With so many streaming platforms and innovative storytelling techniques, the landscape is constantly changing, allowing for fresh voices and perspectives to emerge and captivate audiences like us gamers!
Last year, a total of eight drama series were contenders for an Emmy award. Two of these shows, “Succession” from HBO (which received the award) and “Better Call Saul” from AMC, were nominated due to being in their final seasons. The remaining five shows – “Andor,” “House of the Dragon,” “The Last of Us,” “The White Lotus,” and “Yellowjackets” – weren’t eligible for this year’s Emmys as they hadn’t aired any new episodes within the eligibility period, which was from June 1, 2023 to May 31, 2024.
As a long-time television enthusiast with a deep appreciation for the art of storytelling and the craftsmanship that goes into producing high-quality series, I find it fascinating to observe the trends and patterns in Emmy nominations over the decades.
At the 2024 Emmy Awards, four newcomers among the eight drama series nominees – “3 Body Problem,” “Fallout,” “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” and “Shōgun” – received recognition for their debut seasons. Previously established shows like “The Gilded Age,” “The Morning Show,” and “Slow Horses” gained their first nominations in the series category.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed how big-budget series with spectacular effects, like “Andor,” “HotD,” and “The Last of Us,” are taking longer than a year between seasons these days. The labor strikes last year added to the delay in some shows being eligible for awards consideration this time around. Before the Writers Guild of America went on strike last May, several 2023 nominees had already started their writers rooms. If studios and streamers had reached a faster agreement with the writers and actors (whose strike began in July), some of the shows from the previous year might have made it in time for this award season.
