The Latest Addition to NBC’s Paris Olympics Coverage? Google’s AI Tech (Exclusive)

As a dedicated gamer and tech enthusiast, I’m thrilled about the innovative partnership between NBC and Google during this year’s Paris Olympics. The integration of Google’s AI technology into NBC’s coverage is a game-changer for sports fans like me.

At this year’s Paris Olympics, Leslie Jones from NBC, known as their avid fan commentator, may explore a new sport herself. To assist her, she’ll utilize Google Gemini for insightful information. Similarly, during NBC’s prime-time broadcast, when the host aims to clarify why lane assignments matter in swimming to viewers, they can rely on Google Search’s “AI Overview” for an informative explanation.

Viewers watching this year’s games on NBC, Peacock, and other NBCUniversal platforms will notice a significant presence of Google, following a comprehensive partnership agreement between the tech company and NBC as well as Team USA.

As a sports enthusiast and marketing professional with years of experience under my belt, I can tell you that most sponsorship deals are just that – deals. Brands pay for on-screen branding and commercial spots in exchange for association with an athlete or team. But the partnership between the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC), Google, and NBCUniversal is no ordinary sponsorship.

As a seasoned tech enthusiast with years of experience exploring various integration features, I can confidently say that Google’s expansive range of offerings truly sets it apart from other tech companies. In my opinion, one of the most impressive aspects is their seamless integration of AI technology across various applications.

Marvin Chow, Google’s VP of marketing, shares how they view their brand as indispensable in technology: “When you need to discover, navigate, or accomplish something, Google products are always there for you.” Instead of simply advertising our products, we consider how they can assist NBC and Team USA in delivering an optimal fan experience. What challenges are they facing? How can Google’s offerings help them overcome these issues? We primarily focus on search, AI, and Gemini, but this serves as the foundation.

As a gamer, I’d describe it like this: During NBC’s TV and Peacock coverage, Jones will have Gemini as her trusty sidekick. This AI will assist me in learning new sports facts, discovering interesting info about Paris, or even creating a customized watch schedule for the games. Additionally, Google’s AI Overview will be integrated into “Explain the Games” segments, making it easier for me to understand complex game strategies and rules. And let’s not forget the stunningly realistic 3D models of venues, generated by Google Maps, which will make me feel like I’m actually there, experiencing the Olympics firsthand.

As a gamer, I’d say: “Not only that, but Team USA athletes will be featured in social media videos and late-night TV promos under the title ‘One Day in Paris.’ In these clips, they’ll navigate the city using cool tech tools like Google Lens, Circle to Search, Immersive View on Google Maps, and Gemini. It’s going to be an amazing virtual adventure!”

Chris Pepe, the chief commercial officer for the United States Olympic and Paralympic Properties, shares, “This is Team USA’s initial team-up with Google. We’re thrilled about this new alliance between NBC and Team USA, which will provide a unified marketing strategy using our athletes across all platforms – broadcast, digital, and consumer applications. Our goal is to leverage Google’s extensive collection of tools and apps to help showcase the inspiring tales of Team USA athletes on a global scale.”

NBC faces a test in maintaining the authenticity of its Olympic content and protecting its brand image while securing sponsorship deals, as Dan Lovinger, NBC Olympics sales president, explains.

He argues that the way NBC will integrate Google’s AI tech and products will be a natural fit for viewers, actually adding to coverage, rather than distracting from it.

I, as a huge fan of Google, made it a priority for us to authentically represent their products and capabilities within our Olympic Games coverage. By integrating Google’s offerings, we aimed to enhance the viewer experience and align with both Google’s mission and ours.

As a passionate gamer, I can’t wait to experience the latest advancements in AI technology from Google during my gaming sessions. With millions of players joining me, it’s an exciting opportunity for Google to showcase its innovative products and features to us all.

As a gamer, I can tell you that we’re unique among sponsors since our product is not just mentioned during the broadcast, but actually used and showcased. This means you, as the viewer, get valuable information and, hopefully, enjoy an engaging experience along the way.
