One Of Abbott Elementary's Writers Celebrated The Show's Emmy Nominations By Seemingly Taking A Shot At The Bear

As a dedicated fan of both Quinta Brunson’s “Abbott Elementary” and the television industry as a whole, I can’t help but be thrilled by the recent Emmy nominations that recognize the exceptional talent and creativity showcased in these groundbreaking series. However, I must admit that I share the sentiments of the “Abbott Elementary” writing team, particularly Joya McCrory, who subtly shaded “The Bear” in her Twitter post.

Three short seasons have passed for “Abbott Elementary” by Quinta Brunson, and it’s already making waves as a top-tier sitcom. This week, the 2024 Primetime Emmy nominations confirmed its status, awarding nine recognitions to the show’s cast and crew. As they gear up for season four, set to air on ABC starting October 9, they face formidable competition from “The Bear” on FX on Hulu. The team is well-aware of this challenge, as one writer playfully acknowledged the Emmy news with a subtle jab at their rival series.

As a dedicated gamer following the Emmy Awards nominations, I’m thrilled to see “The Bear” raking in an impressive 23 nods. But the competition is fierce, with “Abbott Elementary” giving it a run for its money in numerous categories like Outstanding Comedy Series, Best Supporting Actor, and Lead Actress. Notable Black actresses Quinta Brunson and Ayo Edebiri are making waves in Hollywood with their exceptional performances on these shows.

Delighted by Abbott Elementary’s multiple Emmy nods this season, including for Outstanding Comedy Series – given that more than half of our episodes carry a predominantly humorous tone, according to the TV Academy’s standards. 😃

The writer didn’t explicitly mention “The Bear” by name, but it’s evident from the context that this is the show being referred to. Notably, “The Bear” cleaned up at the 2023 Primetime Emmys, taking home awards in all the categories it was nominated for. In contrast, “Abbott Elementary” secured just one win – for Quinta Brunson in the Outstanding Lead Actress category. Ayo Edebiri, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, ended up winning in that category instead.

It’s worth noting that the Emmys have a tendency to favor repeat winners, which makes some people think that “The Bear” is strongly positioned to take home all the awards again this year following its victory in 2023. However, this perspective raises concerns for many, who believe that acknowledging the same series once more could be detrimental to other deserving shows and actors, such as “Abbott Elementary,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Hacks,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Palm Royale,” and “Reservation Dogs,” all of which are contenders for the Outstanding Comedy Series category.

The Chicago dramedy has earned its accolades, but some find it harder to identify the humor in “The Bear” compared to other shows. With heavier themes like suicide and depression, and a faster tempo, “The Bear” presents a more challenging comedic experience.

Several times, people have expressed that it’s merely an honor to be nominated. I believe there is some truth to this sentiment. However, it appears that some contestants from “Abbott Elementary” might feel somewhat resentful about competing against a show that arguably doesn’t belong in the same category.

Don’t miss out on the excitement at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards! The show will be broadcasted on ABC at 8 p.m. ET, this coming September 15, Sunday. And don’t forget to check the 2024 TV schedule for the air dates of your beloved shows.
