BAO Releases First Summer Zine 'The Aircon is Broken'

As a huge fan of BAO and their unique approach to food and storytelling, I’m absolutely thrilled about Erchen Chang’s latest project: “The Aircon is Broken” digital zine. Growing up in Asia during the sweltering hot summers, I can relate to the nostalgic longing for cool relief that this zine encapsulates so beautifully.

Erchen Chang, one half of BAO, is debuting a digital magazine called “The Aircon is Broken” which delves into childhood memories of summers in Asia. Featuring a mix of essays and recipes, this unique publication gathers contributions from various circles of friends and collaborators. Notable names include fashion designer Rejina Pyo and food writer Angela Hui, who share their nostalgic tales and cooling methods. Selected recipes will be incorporated into BAO Noodle Shop menus in Shoreditch and Battersea during the summer season.

The zine is visually captivating with its combination of evocative photography and Chinese calligraphy, enhancing its artistic and cultural richness within a lo-fi style. Various contributors add to the diversity of experiences, ranging from pre-air conditioning Seoul’s heat to Hong Kong’s humidity. Delight in recipes for refreshing dishes like chilled cucumber soup and sweet tofu pudding. Chang aspires for this endeavor to become an annual tradition, providing glimpses into their creative journey and inspirations.

The Aircon is Broken is now available for download via BAO’s social media channels.
