As a huge fan of the original “Happy Gilmore” film from 1996, I couldn’t be more thrilled to hear that a sequel is finally in the works! The news that Kyle Newacheck, who has previously directed Netflix projects including “Game Over Man!” and “Murder Mystery,” will be helming “Happy Gilmore 2” fills me with excitement. Having Adam Sandler himself returning as the iconic character, along with co-writer Tim Herlihy, promises a faithful continuation of the beloved sports comedy.
The long-awaited comedy sequel “Happy Gilmore 2” now has a director in the person of Kyle Newacheck from “What We Do in the Shadows” and “Workaholics.” With a director in place, production on the sequel to “Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore” is set to start on September 5, 2023, and wrap up by November 18, 2023. This timeline gives us an idea of when we can expect to watch the new release on Netflix.
As a gamer, I’m excited to share that I’ve had the privilege of working on Netflix projects before, and I’m thrilled to be part of “Happy Gilmore 2”! Previously, I directed episodes for popular shows like “What We Do in the Shadows,” “Workaholics,” “Community,” and “Parks and Recreation.” In addition, I helmed “Game Over Man!” for Netflix back in 2018, and produced the first “Murder Mystery” movie featuring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. Both Sandler and Netflix were impressed with my work, and they believe that I can create something truly special that honors the legacy of the original “Happy Gilmore.”
Netflix announced this year that they have commissioned a new installment of the beloved Adam Sandler sports comedy “Happy Gilmore.” This sequel comes nearly three decades after the original was released. In this upcoming production, Sandler will once again portray the title role of Happy Gilmore, the struggling hockey player with a temper who finds success in golf. Sandler and Tim Herlihy, the co-writer of the initial film, are teaming up to write the script for this new project.
What Do We Know About Happy Gilmore 2?
Discovered in 1996, the original “Happy Gilmore” film introduced us to Adam Sandler’s character of the same name, an ice hockey player with a fiery temper and a hidden knack for golf. Joining him were Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, and the late Carl Weathers. While critical reception was split when it initially came out, this underdog sports comedy has since developed a dedicated fanbase, leaving some fans curious about how Netflix’s upcoming sequel will compare to the original.
Information about the plot of “Happy Gilmore 2” is still under wraps. However, Adam Sandler has previously mentioned the possibility of a sequel in 2022. He hinted that any new movie would incorporate the long time gap between films as part of the storyline.
It would be an enjoyable experience to take the senior tour of Happy Gilmore and socialize with those veterans, attempting to craft a compelling script about Happy’s later years. However, I cannot guarantee that such an opportunity will arise in the future.
Sandler is set to reappear in “Happy Gilmore 2,” but it’s undecided if McDonald and Bowen from the original cast will return. With McDonald expressing eagerness on social media and Bowen collaborating with Sandler in “Hubie Halloween” recently, there’s optimism they might join. Unfortunately, some cherished cast members like Bob Barker (The Price is Right host), Carl Weathers, and Joe Flaherty have passed away. Sandler intends to honor their memories by incorporating them into the sequel.
