As a huge fan of Mary Harron’s groundbreaking and chilling adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ “American Psycho,” I’ve always held the film in high regard. Christian Bale’s masterful portrayal of Patrick Bateman, coupled with the satirical commentary on society, class, and masculinity, has left an indelible mark on horror cinema. It’s a testament to its enduring legacy that “American Psycho” remains a beloved classic in the genre.
Mary Harron’s “American Psycho,” released in 2000 and based on Bret Easton Ellis’ novel of the same name, quickly gained a following as a horror classic. Christian Bale’s portrayal of Patrick Bateman is both chilling and brilliant, despite his initial unease with the fame the role brought him. Fortunately, “American Psycho” has endured more than many other films in its genre due to a lack of disappointing sequels. Nevertheless, there are other horror movies worth watching that are similar in tone, and “American Psycho” even has one direct-to-video continuation – though it’s generally considered best forgotten.
Two years after the release of “American Psycho,” the sequel “American Psycho II: All American Girl” emerged. In this film, Mila Kunis portrays Rachael Newman, who avenged her babysitter’s death by killing Patrick Bateman (Michael Cramer) at the age of 12. Now a college student, she harbors ambitions of joining the FBI. To achieve this, she initially aims to secure the teaching assistant role under her professor, Robert Starkman (William Shatner). This goal consumes her, driving her to commit multiple murders and employ deceitful tactics to advance.
Having received unfavorable reviews from critics with a 11% rating and a mere 18% approval from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, “American Psycho II” is not widely appreciated. Even its star, Mila Kunis, openly expressed her disdain for the film.
Even Kunis herself didn’t like American Psycho II
“The chilling ‘American Psycho’ stands out as a horror icon for various reasons. Beyond the gore and captivating villain, it offers insightful critiques on capitalism, class, and their impact on acceptable behavior and legal consequences. It further investigates masculinity and sexuality, illustrating how they shape social interactions, office politics, and self-perception. In contrast, ‘American Psycho II: All American Girl’ falls short with a thin plot, inconsistent portrayal of its protagonist, and an unoriginal twist ending. It’s no surprise Mila Kunis expressed disinterest in the film.”
In 2005, Mila Kunis shared her thoughts on the potential “American Psycho” sequel with MTV News. She expressed her reservations about a third installment of the film and continuing Rachael Newman’s story. “Someone please put a stop to this,” she exclaimed, jokingly suggesting a petition. At the time, she was unaware that the project would become “American Psycho II.” It had originally been intended as a different movie, but got re-edited into a sequel. She admitted feeling uneasy about the final product and expressed no interest in participating in another film, which ultimately did not materialize.
As a dedicated gamer and fan of the “American Psycho” series, I’m thrilled that a new comic book sequel has emerged, following Patrick Bateman’s storyline since the release of “American Psycho II” in the past few years. For many of us, this comic will be the definitive continuation of the 2000 movie, as “American Psycho II” gradually fades into obscurity.
