As a die-hard fan of The Hunger Games franchise and a devoted follower of Tanner Buchanan’s acting career, I am beyond thrilled about the recent buzz surrounding his potential casting as the younger Haymitch Abernathy in the upcoming prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping. Having grown up with Katniss Everdeen’s story and being captivated by Woody Harrelson’s portrayal of Haymith Abernathy in the original trilogy, I can only imagine how amazing it would be to witness Tanner bring this iconic character to life during his formative years.
Approximately a month has passed since the announcement of “Sunrise on the Reaping,” the prequel to “The Hunger Games” featuring Sunrise as the working title and Woody Harrelson’s character as the focus. The fan casting hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down, with various names being suggested. Tom Glynn-Carney from “House of the Dragon” is one such name, and now a “Cobra Kai” star is gaining traction among fans. The idea of Tanner Buchanan portraying the younger version of the District 12 mentor is intriguing, but his reaction to discovering that fans have cast him in this role makes it even more appealing.

In my opinion, Tanner Buchanan would be an excellent selection for this character part. Although I appreciate Glynn-Carney’s suggestion in fan casting, he is somewhat too old for the role. This film will focus on Haymitch’s games, and the character will be a teenager. While Designated Survivor’s actor is 25 years old, Buchanan has portrayed teenage roles convincingly for quite some time now, in Cobra Kai, for instance.
In addition, his appearance on “Cobra Kai” features a lengthy hairstyle akin to Haymitch’s from “The Hunger Games.” Moreover, a recent blonde makeover further proves his capability of nailing down the District 12 tribute look.

I’m thrilled to share that in 2026, a new book titled “Sunrise on the Reaping” about Haymitch’s experiences in The Hunger Games is set to be published. After that, a movie adaptation will come to life on the big screen.
When “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” was released, Tom Blyth brilliantly stepped into the role of President Snow, previously portrayed by Donald Sutherland, leaving a striking impression. Similarly, Tanner Buchanan could have delivered an equally captivating performance as Haymitch.
As an avid fan, I can’t help but express my excitement about the upcoming “Hunger Games” prequel and the possibility of who might bring the character of Haymitch to life on screen. However, it remains a mystery for now. Yet, amongst us fans, there’s been a lot of buzz surrounding potential castings. We strongly believe that Kiefer Sutherland would make an excellent President Snow. Moreover, some of us are even hoping for a Finnick prequel next! The anticipation is palpable as we eagerly await this long-awaited story. Our minds have been running wild with casting suggestions and intriguing plot ideas. It’ll be fascinating to see which, if any, of these fan theories materialize in the final product.
Clearly, Tanner Buchanan is excited about the prospect of playing the character, and so am I!
