The Star Wars Character You Likely Don't Realize Tim Curry Played

As a long-time gamer and Star Wars fan, I can’t help but be in awe of Tim Curry’s incredible contributions to the world of entertainment, especially his iconic voice work as Chancellor Sheev Palpatine, aka Darth Sidious, in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. With an impressive filmography spanning decades and various mediums, it’s no surprise that this versatile actor left his mark on pop culture, including the beloved Star Wars franchise.

Tim Curry may have stepped away from the limelight, but his filmography is nothing short of impressive and iconic. Throughout his long-lasting career, he brought his acting skills to beloved movies such as “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” “Clue,” and “Muppet Treasure Island.” Additionally, Curry made significant contributions to television with roles in shows like “Over the Top,” “Monk,” and “Criminal Minds.” Furthermore, he left indelible marks on popular franchises including “Star Wars,” where he had a notable voice acting role.

I’m a huge fan of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” and in Seasons 5 and 6, I had the amazing opportunity to bring Chancellor Sheev Palpatine, also known as Darth Sidious, to life through my voice acting. This was an intriguing project with an interesting history. I made my unrecognized debut in “Revival” during Season 5, and I concluded my tenure on the show with “Sacrifice” in Season 6. I followed Ian Abercrombie, who had voiced Palpatine for the first 29 episodes before his passing in 2012.

Before Curry’s debut as Palpatine on “Clone Wars” even aired, Dave Filoni, the show’s supervising director, had already decided that Curry was the ideal choice for the role.

The Clone Wars,” despite having only a few appearances. His subtle depiction of evil as Palpatine and transformation into the full-blown Force lightning-wielding villain as Darth Sidius leaves a lasting impression on fans, earning him much praise. Redditor u/The_Muddy_ChicK3N expressed her admiration for Curry’s portrayal of Palpatine’s ominous voice change in the series. Numerous comments in another thread by u/Samoht99 celebrate his outstanding performances in “Clone Wars.”

Of course, one of the creative masterminds behind “The Clone Wars,” Dave Filoni, knew he’d fit the bill from the moment he was cast. “We needed someone to deliver a performance that could stand alongside what Ian McDiarmid and Ian Abercrombie created as this legendary Star Wars character,” Filoni told HuffPost in 2013. “There is little question that bringing in an actor of Tim’s caliber was perfect for Chancellor Palpatine.” He continued, promising fans that Curry’s voice was perfect for the character and that the accomplished actor had no trouble at all tapping into the dark side. “We are fortunate to have him.”

In the final analysis, Dave Filoni’s statement proved accurate. It’s a shame that Tim Curry voiced Chancellor Palpatine in just ten episodes of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” Fans missed out on a full experience of Curry’s talent as the voice behind this powerful Sith character in the “Star Wars” universe.
