‘Amélie’ Getting French Re-Release Ahead of Paris Olympics

As a devoted film enthusiast and someone who has had the pleasure of experiencing the magic of Amélie during its initial release, I am thrilled to hear that this timeless masterpiece is getting a well-deserved re-release in Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Amélie, the 2001 fairytale romance from director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, has arguably done more than any film, before or since, in promoting the Parisian tourism board version of the City of Lights. The quirky, irresistibly charming story of a shy Parisian do-gooder — Audrey Tautou in her breakout role — determined to bring joy to the lonely citizens of the French capital was an instant classic.

As a huge fan of that incredible movie, I can’t help but feel proud of its remarkable success. Starring the talented Mathieu Kassovitz, Jamel Debbouze, Isabelle Nanty, and Dominique Pinon, it truly shined during award season, raking in an impressive 13 nominations and 4 wins at France’s Césars – including for Best Film and Best Director. Additionally, it earned a well-deserved 5 Oscar nods, including for Best International Film. Not only did it captivate audiences in France, selling over 9 million tickets, but it also left its mark globally, with more than 30 million tickets sold and an impressive $175 million global gross.

Starting in 2024, tourists attending the Summer Olympics in Paris will have an opportunity to relive the charming film “Amélie.” Distributor UGC plans to screen the classic movie once again in French cinemas, retaining its original language with English subtitles. This strategy aims to captivate a portion of the vast number of international tourists coming to the city for the XXXIII Olympiad. The revival of “Amélie” in French theaters is set to begin on July 24.

Approximately 15 million people are projected to visit Paris based on data from the Paris Tourist Office for the Olympic Games taking place from July 26 to August 11, as well as the Paralympic Games from August 28 to September 8. Among them are approximately 2 million travelers coming from countries such as the U.S. and the U.K.

For people aiming to avoid the throngs near the Louvre and Eiffel Tower, consider watching “Amélie” in the cinema as an alternative.
